The MLS Expansion Draft and what it means for the Fire...

The MLS Expansion Draft date has now been set.  It will occur on Nov. 24th, and will be used to fill out the rosters of the 2 new teams joining the league, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers.  Each team will be potentially giving up players to help the two teams build their rosters.

Basically, both new teams will select 10 players each from a player pool populated by the other teams in the league.  However, the new teams won't just be able to select any player on the roster of current MLS teams.  Each teams is allowed to "protect" 11 players, as well as academy youths/Generation Adidas, etc.  Those players will be effectively off limits to the new teams.

This obviously means change for the Fire, especially coming off a season in which we missed the playoffs.  So, my question to you is, if you had to pick up to 2 players you would prefer the Fire to lose, who would it be?  There are many options, thus I don't think a poll is in order, so if everyone can post their opinions to get discussion going, we should have a good start from there.  Obviously, I don't think any of us want to any Fire family members, but it is possible that 1 or 2 will go.  I should note that each team cannot lose more than 2 players to this expansion draft, and once a player is lost, that team can then add a player to the protected list.

For me, it's a tough call.  The Fire will need to take many things into account, not the least of which is how much roster makeover is needed to make the playoffs next year.  Further, if we don't keep all of our DP's, we need to decide which players we have that we are planning on calling on to help the void, which would thus effect who we protect.  We also need to take into account what, if any player acquisitions we will make, and which young players we feel are ready for more time, and which may not fit the Fire.  As you can see, this is definitely a major headache for Mr. Klopas and anyone else helping to call the shots.

What are your thoughts?  Right now, I don't know if I could pick who I would want to leave.  There are too many questions marks transitioning into next year.  I think it would be much easier to pick 11 to protect, so here are mine: Ljungberg (if he stays), Sean Johnson, Calen Carr, Patrick Nyarko, Watson-Siriboe, John Thorrington, Steve Kinney, Wilman Conde, Marco Pappa, Dasan Robinson, and Gonzalo Segares.  It makes it even tougher to decide for players like C.J. Brown.  I would never want to seem him go to another team, but if he does play, it would probably be only one more year.  Do we use a protection spot on him and risk losing a younger player?  This definitely can impact some of the deeper teams in the league, as it would be expected that many teams will lose 2 unprotected players.
