MLS Releases Reserve League Schedule

Major League Soccer is re-launching its Reserve League this year, with games beginning even this weekend. The MLS Reserve League is going to provide developmental opportunities to players we didn't really get a chance to see in 2010, like Corben Bone.  The Reserve League is also the entire reason first team rosters went from 24 in 2010 to 30 players in 2011.  The new MLS Reserve League will be split into East, Central, and West divisions with teams facing each divisional opponent twice for a total of 10 games per team. Clubs may schedule additional games for their reserve squads against non-MLS opponents. The games featuring two MLS reserve teams begin March 20 and conclude October 16.

The two interesting parts about this schedule for me are the other teams the Fire Reserves might draw and the alignment of West, Central, and East divisions.  I wonder if Manchester United might bring a 'B team' to play our Reserve team on July 23rd this year.  I also wonder if the West, Central, and East divisions are being rolled out for a 'test drive' once the league expands ever larger over time.  Those are topics to hark on later but the full MLS Reserve League Schedule is published after the break.

USMNT Allocation Order

The allocation ranking is the mechanism used to determine which MLS club has first priority to acquire a U.S. National Team player who signs with MLS after playing abroad, or a former MLS player who returns to the League after having gone to a club abroad for a transfer fee. The allocation rankings may also be used in the event two or more clubs file a request for the same player on the same day. The allocations will be ranked in reverse order of finish for the 2010 season, taking playoff performance into account.

Once the club uses its allocation ranking to acquire a player, it drops to the bottom of the list. A ranking can be traded, provided that part of the compensation received in return is another club’s ranking. At all times, each club is assigned one ranking. The rankings reset at the end of each MLS League season.
