Bob Ryan is an uninformed idiot.
Bob Ryan is an absolute jackass. I have never liked him anyway, and I can give nothing but respect and admiration to the Timbers fans for their home debut. Any MLS fan of any team should be proud for our sport to showcase that enthusiasm to a national audience. There has to be at least a few people that watched the game and may now be more interested in soccer and the MLS because of that atmosphere. If any of you saw the episode of Around the Horn recently where Bob Ryan called it a civic joke, you may be pretty mad. He said it's worse than Boston singing Sweet Caroline, and said there was no respect for the anthem, it was just a show. What an absolute moron. They were signing our National Anthem whole heartedly. Take a look at the next sporting event you go to. Many fans are talking, texting, or in general not respecting the National Anthem in any way, shape, or form. If 18,000 plus fans signing the same patriotic song is disrespectful, then apparently texting your best friend is a much better way to honor our country and our veterans? Maybe Bob Ryan also came up with the MLS Allocation List? And while he's at it, he should cut his Orville Redenbacher hair. You may think it's weird for a Fire fan to be mad at this, but he is attacking one of the wonderful things about our sport AND our league, which is the unity and participation other sports leagues don't even come close to enjoying. An attack on one is an attack on all.

Just to note...
The Sons of Ben and much of PPL Park sing the national anthem every game without any attention.
Also, Bob Ryan is a curmudgeon.

If it was any other sport...
he would be sining a different tune. Pun completely intended.
I saw a commentator on ESPN talk about how the MLS is amateurish because some teams shoot confetti after a goal is scored and because the Toronto FC Fans toss streamers on to the field.
When an WNBA team (Houston Comets) folded a few years back, and the Arena Football League announced a hiatus, I heard a radio personality talk about how the MLS was next. That was back in 2008 or ’09.
I don’t understand why, but there is a population in America that sees soccer as a boring, feminine, Euro-centric sport, and they want it to fail. This same population is mostly made up of old white guys who think sports like baseball and golf are manly and thrilling. They’re a bunch of narrow minded dinosaurs, and we’ll just have to put up with them until they all keel over.
For the time being, just remember:

Also...
There’s nothing worse than Sweet Caroline.
NOTHING!

Hahaha
totally agree. I am not a fan of Boston at all. I also completely concur on some people wanting soccer to fail, Bob Ryan being one of them. The funny thing is, I had the exact same conversation a few weeks ago with a HUGE Nascar fan. He was making fun of soccer, saying it was a girly sport. I then asked him what made driving around in a circle for 500 laps while peeing in your pants with 400,000 fans chugging Busch Light and cheering you on more manly than soccer. He had no response.
