USMNT Gold Cup Roster; Bob Bradley Announces United States Men's National Team Decisions
Bob Bradley just announced the USMNT roster for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup which starts June 5th at Cowboys Stadium. The United States Men's National Team plays their first game in Detroit vs. Canada on June 7th. Join me after the break for the full roster and my thoughts.
U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION
GOALKEEPERS (3): Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Saint-Etienne), Jonathan Bornstein (UANL Tigres), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Eric Lichaj (Leeds), Oguchi Onyewu (FC Twente), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls), Jonathan Spector (West Ham United)
MIDFIELDERS (9): Freddy Adu (Rizespor), Michael Bradley (Aston Villa), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Benny Feilhaber (New England Revolution), Jermaine Jones (Blackburn Rovers), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)
FORWARDS (3): Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Jozy Altidore (Bursaspor), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
There are a couple of surprises for me. First, it's nice to see a number of MLS players here. Seeing Nick Rimando make the cut is very good I think. I would have to rate him as the top keeper in the MLS right now with Kevin Hartman a close second.
The really big surprise to me is the addition of Freddy Adu. Honestly, I am pretty happy. For all his supposed attitude issues, the kid (yes, he is still young) has had a remarkable amount of pressure on him for many years. Although a rumored possible move back to MLS has not come to fruition, the move to the second level in Turkey has really helped. By all reports, Freddy has looked quite good for Rizespor. It's nice to see him finally enjoy a bit of success in comparison to all he has put up with. Some of that has been self made, but hopefully he is turning the corner into becoming the next great USMNT player.
Wondolowski making the team surprised me a bit as well. That's not to say it's not deserved, he is starting the year out very strong in MLS play building on his magnificent 2010 performance. I thought the spot was going to go to Teal Bunbury, but as long as our strikers are scoring goals, I don't care if Pee Wee Herman is up top for the USMNT if it means we are winning Cups. Here's a full listing of No. 1 through No. 23.

Bedoya being left out is a bit of a surprise...
Timmy Chandler was until a little more info. was gathered. he is still young, and said he was pretty drained from European play and needed a break. I am fine with that, definitely don’t want to do more harm than good at that young of an age. There will be Gold Cups to come for him.
The other player I would have liked to see was Mix Diskerud. He looked very good in friendlies earlier this year, but he is young and still has time as well. All in all should be a solid roster for the Gold Cup.

I’m happy to see Chicago represented. Eric Lichaj, Jonathan Spector, I didn’t know Jermaine Jones considers his ‘hometown’ Chicago.

I did not know that either...
he’s a defensive midfielder. Obviously I am dreaming, but it would be awesome for the Fire to get him. He would make Sega look timid, Jermaine has 14 yellow cards and one red this year in all competitions. Now that’s someone that could bring fire and swagger to this team. How about a Logan Pause for Jermaine straight up? I only wish…

Jones grew up in Frankfurt-Bonames. His father is an African-American soldier who was stationed in Germany. As a child, Jones lived in Chicago and Greenwood, Mississippi in the U.S. before his parents divorced and he returned to Germany with his mother.
