USMNT Gamethread: US vs. Belgium; 1:30PM; ESPN and ESPN3.com

Hopefully Tim doesn't have to make too many saves today.

The USA will continue it's phoenix-like reformation this afternoon against what will be a very good Belgium side.  USA fans are not only hoping for a win to wipe the taste of defeat against Costa Rica out of their mouths, but they are also looking for the Americans to continue their integration of the Klinsmann system and jettisoning the Bradley system.  The roster will look a bit different for this match, as Landon Donovan, Teal Bunbury, Chris Pontius and Fabian Johnson have returned to their respective clubs.  Steve Cherundolo, Clint Dempsey, and Kyle Beckerman have joined the team.  I am definitely looking forward to a more dynamic look than we had the other night.  Clint obviously brings attacking power, and the back line should be fortified with the addition of Cherundolo.  Beckerman looked good recently vs. Mexico, and should provide some good midfield ball movement.  I am going to say the US takes this match 2-1.  Goals from Altidore and Dempsey.  Please join us in the threads.  I will be commenting sporadically for the US game when work allows.  More international games are being updated in the megathread.  Follow us after the break for the USMNT starting lineup.

Star-divide

USA XI: Tim Howard; Steve Cherundolo, Clarence Goodson, Carlos Bocanegra, Timothy Chandler; Maurice Edu, Jose Torres, Clint Dempsey; Robbie Rogers, Jozy Altidore, Brek Shea

USA subs: Bill Hamid, Michael Orozco Fiscal, Kyle Beckerman, Jeff Larentowicz, Sacha Kljestan, Jonathan Spector, Juan Agudelo

Well, that was mostly Belgium there in the 1st half

they are attacking and we are on our heels. We also aren’t holding the ball well in midfield. Let’s see if Jurgen makes any changes at half. We definitely need to get some offense going.

Had to laugh there...

ESPN just showed the commercial for soccer’s biggest events being shown. I think they need to edit it to say soccer’s biggest events- as long as another US sport doesn’t get delayed or run over time…

US nets a goal but it won't count...

Jurgen not happy. Hard to tell by the replay, Harkes assumes handball was called. Tough break, nice header by Edu.

Well that's it...

a bit disheartening to lose, albeit in poor soccer conditions. Although some fans will be upset, keep in mind this is not year 5 of Bradley. It’s a few games into Jurgen’s tenure. Rome wasn’t built in a day, the new look US team won’t be either. We should really start to see some progress around the time of World Cup qualifying.

We do need to score more goals though, they have been pretty few and far between lately. Still, a 1-0 loss in bad conditions to a very good team is nothing to be ashamed about. I of course want us to win, but I would rather have growing pains now then during WCQ.

I got bad news for you

The game aired on ESPN2, so you likely DVRed a NASCAR race. You can watch on ESPN3 though.

Saw another replay on disallowed goal...

gotta say it was a poor call. Shades of Edu getting robbed in last year’s World Cup. Of course, that was an even worse call against Slovenia.

USMNT Allocation Order

The allocation ranking is the mechanism used to determine which MLS club has first priority to acquire a U.S. National Team player who signs with MLS after playing abroad, or a former MLS player who returns to the League after having gone to a club abroad for a transfer fee. The allocation rankings may also be used in the event two or more clubs file a request for the same player on the same day. The allocations will be ranked in reverse order of finish for the 2010 season, taking playoff performance into account.

Once the club uses its allocation ranking to acquire a player, it drops to the bottom of the list. A ranking can be traded, provided that part of the compensation received in return is another club’s ranking. At all times, each club is assigned one ranking. The rankings reset at the end of each MLS League season.
