Gamethread: USMNT vs. Venezuela

Hopefully we get to see SJ barking out orders tonight and the first USMNT win of 2012

It seems like it has been quite a while since the USMNT last played. They will shake off the rust and try to top Venezuela tonight. And let's hope Sean Johnson sees some playing time as well. Join us for the gamethread tonight to talk all things USMNT.

I think we should resign ourselves that the “goalkeeper of the future” job is Hamid’s to lose.

by iron81 on Jan 21, 2012 7:36 PM CST reply actions

at this point I agree...

it would see Hamid is the go to guy for Jurgen. He did give a good shout out to SJ recently, now he just has to impress as much as he can any chance he gets.

Also, it’s not surprising that Rimando would be the backup before SJ. Rimando has certainly proven his worth many times over. Still don’t quite see the logic on Hamid > Johnson, but whatever, I’m a Chicago fan, not DC.

by Mateu on Jan 21, 2012 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...

people keep saying Hamid has more raw athleticism, but SJ is certainly not lacking in that respect either. I don’t get it either, but maybe it’s the Chicago fan in me too.

Disappointed SJ didn't make the 18

but glad there’s a game thread. It’s 3am in France and, while I hope the game is entertaining enough to keep me awake, chatting with you all will help, too.

Oh, it’s good. I’ve been teaching English here since September and will work until the end of April and come back to the US sometime over the summer. I’m in Mulhouse, a small-ish in eastern France, whose soccer club (FC Mulhouse) is one of the of the oldest in France but currently plays in the 4th division (though they were up in Ligue 1 in recent history).

Definitely, it’s interesting to see the (much) lower divisions in countries that we’re used to thinking of as “elite” soccer areas. I can’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to be there are at least as many, fans at USL and NASL matches as there are here.

The pressure is good… it’s what stood out about the opening minutes, despite the misplaced passes — the whole team was up near the mid-line with the fullbacks pushing up and just the centerbacks anchoring.

Hoping for more concrete excitement in the 2nd half

I realize these are B/C teams from both sides, but somebody better put a string of decent chances together and score. I get that January results are not huge, but still. Regardless of the final outcome, win, loss or draw, I think that not scoring in this situation is unacceptable. I’d rather lose 5-2 than see a 0-0 draw in what is supposed to be an opportunity experiment and give guys a chance to make their case.

Things can be changed.

Just before the USOC, I asked him if he would play for the USMNT. He said he is Ghanian and he certainly is waiting for that call. However, it would be tough for him to say no if asked by USMNT.

With this crop of forwards, certainly couldn’t be cleared off the table.

Jones cross a good one...

Sapong can’t quite get on the end of it,,,save by venezuelan keeper. And they fire it over the crossbar on the other end.

Jones forces a save and a corner...

then Wondo gets on the end of a header but puts it just wide. Also could have been a penalty in the box on venezuela there

Well, why not? If anyone deserved to win this one, it was the US. Still, an odd game overall.

Well, scoring is still clearly an issue under JK. But, this is hardly the A-list squad and they’ve barely ever played together. Maybe not the most rewarding 2 hours I’ve spent awake early in the morning, but a win is a win and, on top of that, I’ve got all day to sleep tomorrow before spending my waking hours anticipating the start of MLS 2012.

by Mateu on Jan 21, 2012 10:11 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, not a clinic on finishing tonight...

but if we have our A team, we probably score 4 or 5 there at least

USMNT Allocation Order

The allocation ranking is the mechanism used to determine which MLS club has first priority to acquire a U.S. National Team player who signs with MLS after playing abroad, or a former MLS player who returns to the League after having gone to a club abroad for a transfer fee. The allocation rankings may also be used in the event two or more clubs file a request for the same player on the same day. The allocations will be ranked in reverse order of finish for the 2010 season, taking playoff performance into account.

Once the club uses its allocation ranking to acquire a player, it drops to the bottom of the list. A ranking can be traded, provided that part of the compensation received in return is another club’s ranking. At all times, each club is assigned one ranking. The rankings reset at the end of each MLS League season.
