The Fire continue to tweak their roster by waiving midfielder Yazid Atouba as the season approaches. The 21 year old Cameroonian Youth International only made three appearances at the beginning of the last season and failed to feature for the rest of the year.
Atouba was selected in second round (30th overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft and did not impress much. This move is not surprising as there has been hints of roster moves coming. Speculation about Atouba's future was expected to be released ever since Guillermo Rivera, among others, noted that Atouba wasn't at the Annual Season Kick Off Luncheon earlier in the week.
This probably won't be the last move that the Fire will make before the season starts. The Fire roster is currently at 28 players, which is where Yallop would like his roster to be at, and a loan deal for Grant Ward is expected to be finalized in the coming days.
The Fire continue to find ways to tinker with the roster despite a tight slaray cap. Atouba made $46,500 last year which isn't a large chunk of money, but still frees up more space after acquiring Mark Watson from the Vancouver Whitecaps earlier this week.
Additional roster news - the future of Orr Barouch was also brought in to question this past week as he was also absent from the Annual Kick Off Luncheon. Jeff Crandall wrote a follow up article about Atouba's departure and explained in the article that Barouch was back home in Los Angeles rehabbing a broken foot.
What do you think of the move to waive Atouba? Did the Fire give up on him too quickly? Predictions for more roster moves?
