Jurgen has picked his 30-man preliminary World Cup roster. These 30 players will now go to Stanford University for a training camp and friendlies versus Azerbaijan and Turkey. On June 2nd, Kilnsmann will have to cut the roster down to 23 for the World Cup in Brazil.
The roster has a few surprise inclusions and exclusions but all of the major names are in the team. Eddie Johnson, Tim Ream and Brek Shea are the biggest omissions by Jurgen. Eddie Johnson has struggled since his big money move to D.C. but many expected him to at least make the 30. Some of the surprising picks include Timmy Chandler, DeAndre Yedlin, Terrence Boyd and John Brooks. In the end, these guys are all fringe players and the important thing is that Dempsey, Donovan, Howard and the rest of the big name players are healthy and called in.
The Fire's Sean Johnson is the only Fire player who had a chance of making this roster. He is seen as the fourth goalkeeper on the depth chart and will be included more in the next World Cup cycle. As cool as it would have been to see Johnson go to the World Cup, he wouldn't have played so it benefits the Fire for him not to be called up. This roster consists of 50% MLS players so many teams will be affected.
As Crandall indicated, the Fire will not have to face quite a few players and could make a difference in some of the games. With the slow start the Fire have had, they can use every advantage that they can get a hold of. The games versus Los Angeles, Kansas City and Seattle will still be difficult games but suddenly look like games where should expect to get some points from.
