You are here for MLS news. Don't worry, there is plenty. There is something unusual about today's roundup. It involves Chris Rolfe needing a new owner for his dog. Yes, here at Hot Time In Old Town, you
can could've adopt(ed) a dog [EDIT: That ship has sailed; see below]. We are here to cater to your every need. Now for the news ...
UEFA announces 'Nations League'
In a shot off the bow of FIFA, UEFA - the governing body for European football - has announced that, starting in 2018, its members' national teams will play in a Champions League-style tournament, tentatively called the Nations League. The tournament will be held during current international friendly dates, and will feature the 50-plus UEFA nations sorted into four tiers, playing in a group-plus-knockout format.
Time to fire up the Football Manager editor, amirite?
Sean Johnson is in, Mike Magee is out. Jurgen Klinsmann has picked his roster for the game versus Mexico. There is no real surprises. It's mostly MLS players which a few players from Mexico. The American Pele/Maradona/Cruyff/Ronaldo/Messi (a/k/a Julian Green) will be on the roster and probably make his first appearance.
Sporting closing on new player
Sporting KC has waived defense Josh Gardner in order to create roster space for a new signing. No one is really sure who they are signing but be sure to keep an eye out for that news. Hopefully it's Nery Castillo.
An elbow to the ribs earns you a one game suspension according to MLS. Jackson has been suspended for the game this weekend but don't worry, Defoe will play his position and Jackson's. Bring on the fantasy points for me!
Ricketts gets two-game suspension
MLS decided to tack on another game to turn Donovan Ricketts' one game suspension into a two game suspension for his collision with Deshorn Brown. Ricketts will miss games versus FC Dallas and Seattle which could be a decisive factor in that game.
Robbie Rogers' recovery plan
The Galaxy winger is hoping to be back in three weeks from his latest injury. For the Galaxy, the most important thing is that they take their time and make sure that he comes back healthy for the rest of the year. If he stays healthy and finds his old form, MLS better watch out for the Galaxy.
Pickens goes to NASL
Well, I tip my hat to New England. They picked up Matt Pickens from Colorado through waivers on Friday and just sold him to Tampa Bay of the NASL a few days later. Pickens was a Revolution player for less than a week and New England got a transfer fee for him. Well done New England, well done.
Someone adopt Rolfe's dog
Chris Rolfe has posted on his Facebook that he needs a new owner for his golden retriever named Nash. It's a two-year-old dog that weighs 65 pounds that he got from a rescue shelter last year. Rolfe is practically offering up Buddy, that athletic dog that was in every movie of my childhood. Someone needs to adopt this dog.
[EDIT: Happy news! Rolfe found someone from his alma mater to adopt Nash.]
Who do you think Sporting will sign? Thoughts on USMNT roster? Were the suspensions fair? Think Rogers can still dominate MLS? Impressed by New England's move? Interested in a dog? (you didn't think you would read that on here this morning, did you?)
