Roundup: Joya Brace Leads U21s, Red Bulls Roll, & More

Mid-week MLS, stadium news, referee complaints, the other Champions League, Joya shines and Sons of Ben lose a member.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Mid-week MLS. It's that little bit that just gets you through the week. If you're a Houston Dynamo fan, you probably wish that you forgot you were playing. The New York Red Bulls were all over Houston and came out winners 4-0. Thierry Henry was once again the center of everything good for New York and Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a hat-trick. Houston looked awful and New York did this without Tim Cahill.

Kreis talks NYCFC

Jason Kreis talked to Sports Illustrated about NYCFC. He said all of the right things about playing in Yankee Stadium. He also says that the team is looking globally for designated players. In my own opinion, I really do think NYCFC will do things the right way in terms of assembling a team but I fear that they will become content in Yankee Stadium.

Olsen speaks out against ref

After the referee did not issue Columbus' Giancarlo Gonzalez a red card, Ben Olsen discussed the no call by the ref. The non-call was a pretty terrible decision. He denied Eddie Johnson a goal scoring opportunity and was the last man back. This stuff happens in MLS and I believe D.C. will get their payback eventually. On the upside, PRO has already thrown the official in question (Juan Guzman) under the bus.

Atlanta stadium

Arthur Blank and MLS Atlanta released a video showing how the field will switch from football to soccer. It's a pretty cool video but I'll remain skeptical until I hear the players review the stadium when the team joins the league.

U.S. U21s win behind Joya brace

The new U.S. U-21's played Club Tijuana and won 2-1. Victor Pineda and Benji Joya both started and Joya scored both goals. It's great to see that we have some promising youngsters on our team and it's even better seeing them excel. Well done boys!

Real Madrid win in that other Champions League

Real Madrid defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in Madrid during the first leg of the Champions League semifinals. Bayern Munich dominated possession all game which wasn't a surprise but Benzema scored off a lighting quick counter in the 19th minute. Real Madrid had a few more chances to increase the lead but will be happy with the win.

Liverpool to renovate Anfield

For years Liverpool has wanted to build a new stadium but now it looks like they will just renovate Anfield. The proposed new look to the stadium looks terrific. The renovation will expand capacity, increase premium seating, redevelop the area surrounding Anfield and preserve the stadium for years to come.

Son of Ben original passes away

In a sad day for MLS supporters, the Philadelphia Union and the Sons of Ben lost a member of their community. Eric Shertz was an original member of the Sons of Ben and recently passed away at the age of 38. Our SB Nation family member, The Brotherly Game had a nice piece about him and so did MLSsoccer.com. The MLS community lost a member and our thoughts go out to the Sons of Ben, the Union and Eric Shertz's family.
