Matt Polster and Brandon Vincent are about to head to two of the most important games in their early careers.
U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team head coach Andi Herzog announced Saturday the Fire duo would be part of the 23-man camp roster ahead of the pivotal Colombia matches. The U-23 team will need to get the best of Colombia in a home-and-home in order to qualify for the last Olympic spot.
The U.S. finds itself in the do-or-die situation after losing to Honduras in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying, but defeating Canada for third place and the chance to take on Colombia in a playoff. Colombia finished second in the South America Youth Championship, which earned it a spot in the playoff.
Polster figures to feature for the team after starting all five games in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying. Polster played some right back and defensive midfield during that stint and will likely fill the same role in the two games against Colombia. Vincent is coming fresh off a stint with senior team in January, along with Polster, that should give him some confidence. Vincent received praise from head U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann for his camp performance, and unlike Polster, saw game action with the senior during the winter friendlies.
The U.S. squad will start the two-game series on March 25 in Colombia in a game that will be aired at 4 p.m. on Fox Sports 1. The second game will be in Frisco, Texas and air at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Polster and Vincent will leave after Saturday's game against Columbus, along with David Accam who is headed to Ghana.
Polster and Vincent may still be able to play in the Philadelphia game on April 2.
