Chicago Fire USL affiliate Tulsa Roughnecks FC defeated Houston Dynamo affiliate Rio Grande Valley FC 1-0 at H-E-B Park on Saturday, in a match that featured all three Fire loanees.
Highlights were plentiful in this match, one that proved to be a rather open-ended affair—not that the scoreline reflects this. However, not too many plays from Fire loanees made it into the highlight reel.
The one that stands out was a golden opportunity for striker Joey Calistri to continue his hot start to the season. In the 34th minute the ball fell to the former Northwestern Wildcat’s feet on the six-yard-line, but he was unable to get his shot off before Toros’ defender Kai Greene stepped across to block.
I’m sure Tulsa head coach David Vaudreuil would have liked Calistri to do better with this chance, but the ball that found its way through to the striker was a bit behind him. By the time the Fire loanee had sorted out his feet, the opening had already gone.
Collin Fernandez and Matej Dekovic also featured in this match, coming on as substitutes in the 67th minute and 84th minute respectively. The two Fire loanees were not overly impressive, though. They did fine in the roles that they were assigned, but by no means stunned the crowd at H-E-B Park.
The Roughnecks will return to action on Friday, May 5 when they travel to Colorado Springs for a rematch with the Switchbacks.
