It’s hard to look at today as anything but a missed opportunity. Portland showed some clear vulnerabilities in the back, and with Chicago getting some good build-up play together there’s no reason why the Red Stars shouldn’t have gotten something out of today’s game. But their finishing problems persist, and the gifted first half penalty was enough to hand Portland all three points. It’s a tough day, to be sure. We’re going to give our WOTM nod to Sam Johnson; in a back line that frequently seemed harried, Johnson was stalwart and composed.
