Chicago Fire goalkeeper Matt Lampson had a rough night on Saturday. Sporting Kansas City beat the Men In Red 3-2 last weekend, due in no small part to some crucial mistakes from the 27-year-old. While I’m inclined to give him a pass for the Benny Feilhaber goal— his backline really hung him out to dry on that one— he definitely should’ve done a bit better on the other two goals.
Everyone has a bad game, and Lampson will surely bounce back, but his performance was definitely a contributing factor to what is now a two-game losing streak from a team that was atop the Supporters’ Shield standings before the Gold Cup break.
Still, Lampson’s night wasn’t all bad. Late in the game, he came up big to save a long-distance strike from Graham Zusi. With the Fire still pushing for a late equalizer, Lamp’s heroic feat kept his team in the game, and he deserves a lot of credit for that.
And now he’s getting that credit. Earlier today, MLS announced that Lampson’s save last Saturday was good enough to be named the Save Of The Week.
