Chicago Fire 1, New York Red Bulls 1: Man of the Match

It’s The Lion’s world, we’re just living in it

MLS: New York Red Bulls at Chicago Fire Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Well, that was ... something. Chicago dominated 70 minutes of play, from the 10th minute to the 80th minute, and started and finished the match slowly. New York were the far better side out of the gate, and it earned them their early goal. However, from there on, the Fire were the better team. Squandered chances cost the Fire three points today, but given their early struggles, they should be happy they got some sort of a result out of this match.

Now, with all that in mind, my MOTM has to be Michael De Leeuw. The Lion was terrific today. The Dutchman found the back of the net once (never mind that it was disallowed for a foul), and set up Nemanja Nikolic’s drought-ending goal with a sensational back heel out of the air. On top of all this, he also put in yet another work-horse-like shift, constantly pressing the ball in all thirds of the field. For these reasons, and because of his desire to win, De Leeuw has earned MOTM honors from me.

Now let us know how you saw it. Vote for your choice for MOTM in the poll below. The poll will be open for two days, after which we’ll publicize the results. (Note: if you’re viewing this post from AMP or Apple News, you won’t see the poll below. Feel free to tell us your pick in the comments.)
