On Monday, a rumor broke out that the Chicago Fire are reportedly set to sign Serbian winger Aleksandar Katai from La Liga side Deportivo Alaves.

Katai would be joining the club on a year-long loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

Who is Katai?

Katai started out his career with FK Vojvodina. There he was scouted by Greek club Olympiacos and signed a four-year contract with them but failed to make a single appearance during his tenure. However, during that period he was sent out on loan to another Greek club, Platanias for a year. He was then sent out a loan once again back to his home country of Serbia where he played for Red Star Belgrade for the 2014-2015 season. His first year was quiet - appearing a total of 20 times and scored twice. Katai then later joined the club on a two-year deal.

The following season, Katai blossomed. In 36 appearances for the club, he scored 23 times in all competitions – helping his club win the league that year.

This attracted Deportivo Alaves to sign him on a three-year contract for the 2016-2017 season. However, as of late, he has been sent down the pecking order of the club. Only appearing four times this season.

Do we need him?

There’s a large hole in the wings since the Fire traded David Accam to the Philadelphia Union for some MLS Funny Money. Katai could be the man to replace him. But then again, he might also end up like the “Armenian Ibra” a.k.a David Arshakyan.

If the Fire does sign Katai, let’s hope he makes Chicago fans sing with joy when he’s running down the wing like Accam beforehand.
