Sanchez Named To MLS Team Of The Week

The Fire goalkeeper’s astonishing performance did not go unnoticed

MLS: Chicago Fire at New York Red Bulls Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

In recognition of his incredible performance this past weekend against the New York Red Bulls, Chicago Fire goalkeeper Richard Sanchez was named to the MLS Team Of The Week for Week 8.

In a matchweek that was dominated by goals, Sanchez stood out for holding a potent RBNY attacking line to just one goal. With Bradley Wright-Philipps and Kaku hammering the back line in search of an equalizer or a gamewinner, Sanchez held firm and gave his team enough breathing room to let their two goals breathe. The Fire left New Jersey with all three points and, perhaps, some hope for the rest of the season.

Fire captain Dax McCarty was also named to the TOTY bench for Week 8 in recognition for his solid work in the center of the park.

Here’s the full Best XI lineup:

GK: Richard Sanchez (Chicago Fire)

DEF: Matt Hedges (FC Dallas), Larrys Mabiala (Portland Timbers), Claude Dielna (New England Revolution)

MID: Ignacio Piatti (Montreal Impact), Yohan Croizet (Sporting Kansas City), Osvaldo Alonso (Seattle Sounders), Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United)
