Sofia Huerta had a pretty good month in April. Her two goals in two games was good enough to earn her Player Of The Week honors last week, as well as help the Chicago Red Stars navigate an otherwise difficult open to the 2018 season.
So it should’ve come as no surprise when Huerta was named the NWSL Player Of The Month for April.
Beyond those two goals— which were, not to put too fine a point on it, spectacular— Huerta also remains tied for first in assists in the league. She was also instrumental in keeping the Red Stars’ midfield glued together during tough games against Sky Blue and Washington. In short: she’s been indispensable to a Chicago team that’s trying hard to make the best of a difficult situation.
Huerta was also named to the NWSL Team Of The Month. Huerta is one of four players making the TOTM for the first time, along with Washington goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe and forward Francisca Ordega, and North Carolina Courage forward Jessica McDonald.
Here is the full TOTM for April:
GK: Aubrey Bledsoe (Washington)
DEF: Emily Sonnett (Portland), Jaelene Hinkle (North Carolina), Estelle Johnson (Washington), Becky Sauerbrunn (Utah)
MID: Crystal Dunn (North Carolina), Sofia Huerta (Chicago), McCall Zerboni (North Carolina)
