Chicago will try and notch their first win in their last 7 matches after coming off of a 2-5 loss against the Orlando Pride. The record setting defeat was the first ever occasion in Chicago’s NWSL history where the Red Stars conceded 5 goals at home.
As Chicago will try to set themselves back on track this weekend, they will have to do so missing some integral parts of their personnel as Alyssa Naeher, Julie Ertz, and Sofia Huerta will be away on United States National Team duty for upcoming friendlies against China.
Where We Last Saw Them
Chicago and Washington last faced off back on April 28, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw. After Frannie Ordega scored early for the Spirit, Alyssa Mautz found the equalizer in the 20th minute. It was the 2018 Red Stars debut for Sam Kerr and Julie Ertz got her first minutes of the season as she made her return from injury. Both teams would have opportunities for more goals, but solid defending and good saves from Audrey Bledsoe and Alyssa Naeher kept the match even for both sides.
Starting Lineup We’d Like To See
No Naeher, No Ertz, No Huerta. No problem. Here’s to the squad that plays ridiculously well when they are missing several starters. Welcome to the pros, Emily Boyd. We’re all rooting for you. NIKKI STANTON, PLZ.
Keys To The Match
FIFA windows: The Red Stars will be without some key players, while Washington will be without the likes of Frannie Ordega. Who will take advantage?
These are the breaks: This match will mark the halfway point for Chicago. A win before a break in the season could prove pivotal for the Red Stars as they enter the second half of the season where points between teams ranked 2nd to 7th are slim.
Players To Watch
Washington Spirit: Audrey Bledsoe has been strong in net for the Spirit this season and was largely the reason Washington earned a draw in their first match up with Chicago. After a tough 3 goal loss to Houston, look for Bledsoe to have a strong game.
Chicago Red Stars: Emily Boyd. 2018 top draft pick for the Chicago Red Stars, No Pugh or Ordega doesn’t mean an easy task ahead. So look for the young back up and the back line to set the tone this match. Also, Nikki Stanton.
