After weeks of rumor and uncertainty, it’s now official: Morgan Brian is back with the Chicago Red Stars.

The official announcement comes after weeks of reports saying Brian had reached an agreement to terminate her contract with Olympique Lyonnais. The initial contract was reported as a two-year deal running through 2020.

The 29-year-old USWNT midfielder was acquired by the Red Stars last year in a midseason trade involving the Houston Dash and Kristie Mewis. Additional stipulations were put in place as ‘future considerations’ should Brian choose to stay and play in the US for the 2018 season.

Lyon announced they had signed Brian during the NWSL offseason. The terms of the initial trade between Houston and Chicago were considered complete, with Chicago retaining Brian’s rights should she decide to return to the NWSL.

Brian’s return to Chicago comes at a crucial time for the Red Stars, who are struggling to stay in the playoff conversation. Beleaguered by injuries and shook by a difficult start to the season, Chicago will need all the help they can get if they want to secure a Top Four finish and secure another postseason appearance in 2018. Morgan Brian gives this Chicago team a stronger punch— and might just be enough to get this team above the red line.
