After months and months of speculation and rumor, it’s finally official. Fernando Torres will NOT be wearing Fire Red.

The former Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, & Chelsea striker announced early on Tuesday morning CT that he had settled on Sagan Tosu in the J1 League (Japan’s top flight division) as the next step in his playing career.

Torres teased the announcement yesterday on Twitter, sending an ever-so-slight ripple through Soccer Twitter. With the press event conveniently scheduled for the same day that the MLS Transfer Window opened, it wasn’t unreasonable to jump to certain conclusions.

There was late speculation that Torres had ultimately chosen to sign with the Fire after all, with one report in The Guardian all but confirming a deal was done. But that ultimately didn’t pan out, and after plugging his new audiovisual book thing at the press conference, executives for Sagan Tosu came out to show off his new shirt.

So that’s that. Hopefully this means we’re closer to Buying Katai. And maybe picking up some defensive reinforcements while we’re at it.
