A Look At Some Possible CB Options For The Fire

The Men In Red desperately need some help in the back

The summer window opens tomorrow and while injured players such as Michael de Leeuw will return to the fold, they aren’t an excuse to ignore this prime opportunity for the Chicago Fire to bolster up the squad. Last week, Veljko Paunovic said the club is still searching for a “No.10, a centerback, a fullback and possibly a goalkeeper.”

I’ve discussed some fantasy signings in the past, but who should the Fire really go after? They really need someone creative in the middle, but for the time being Pauno rigged something that works - with Dax McCarty, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Brandt Bronico commanding the center.

The true weakness of this current Fire squad is the backline. While Pauno’s meme tactics seem to be working up front, they aren’t working in the back. Brandon Vincent can’t be a centerback forever and while I admire Basti playing heroball in the back from time to time, it’s going to catch up to him eventually. So here are two centerbacks that I think the Fire should go after.

Walker Zimmerman

Zimmerman has been the defensive rock for FC Dallas and most recently LAFC. He is an aggressive centerback that the Fire needs – although this aggression could cost the team points. Zimmerman this season had quite a few missed tackles and unnecessary challenges that earned him some yellow cards this season. Regardless of some minor faults, he could be the commanding 6’3 centerback that the Fire needs.

Steve Brinbaum

Brinbaum is probably one of the few players on the DC squad keeping that team afloat. Like Zimmerman he gets pretty aggressive – especially in aerial challenges. He is also very comfortable in other positions in the back. With someone like that, Puano doesn’t need to rely on Diego Campos becoming a fullback overnight.

It would be quite a coup if the Fire managed to get one of them - with the former just joining LAFC and the latter being the captain of the team. But the Fire needs to make some bold moves if they want to try to remain relevant in this season.

But in the end we all know that the Fire is going to get some 34-year-old striker.
