With a grueling final slate of games ahead, and carrying a small roster, the Chicago Red Stars have signed midfielder Erin Yenney and defender Christina Murillo to the squad for the rest of the season. The Red Stars made no other adjustments to the current roster to make room for the additions.
Yenney has already made two appearances with the full Red Stars team this year, as a National Team Replacement Player, first against the Houston Dash in the team’s opening match. The former University of Louisville standout was also called into the full squad for the intended game against Sky Blue on July 28th, again as a National Team Replacement Player, along with Jo Boyles, Ryann Torrero, Megan Buckingham and Zoey Goralski.
Murillo wasn’t available for that Sky Blue match, as she’s seen a significant amount of time with the Mexico Women’s National Team, most recently joining the gold medal winning squad in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia. Murillo has also been a mainstay in the Chicago Red Stars Reserves team, that recently saw their season end in a WPSL semi-final loss to Pensacola FC.
In picking Yenney and Murillo up, the Red Stars get some much-needed depth in both the midfield and the backline, and their promotion is another example of the Reserves squad developing fringe players into being able to have a shot at playing in the NWSL. The new-look Red Stars will take on the Shield-winning North Carolina Courage on August 10th at Toyota Park.
