The Chicago Red Stars announced a trade with Sky Blue FC today, bringing Katie Johnson to Chicago in exchange for draft picks.
The Red Stars will receive Johnson in exchange for Chicago's 6th pick in the first round of the 2019 NWSL draft. SBFC will also receive the Red Stars highest second-round pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft.
Chicago’s roster in the off season has remained relatively quiet. Forward/midfielder Summer Green left the club to join Swedish team Vittsjo. Since being drafted in NWSL, Green struggled with injuries and was mostly player depth for Chicago.
As the draft approaches, and rosters start to take shape in a World Cup year, Chicago has a needs at winger - and another scoring option in general - as Sam Kerr will be gone for National Team duty.
In acquiring Johnson, the Red Stars obtained a young player with potential and eyes for the goal.
The Mexican international was coming off a National Championship with USC when she was drafted in 2017 by Seattle Reign FC during the second round as the 16th pick overall. Johnson appeared in 23 games with 5 starts. She tallied 4 goals and 2 assists on for the 2017 season.
Johnson was traded to Sky Blue FC for the 2018 season where she appeared in 19 games and started in 13, and added another 4 goals and 2 assists.
