They’re back! Training camp is underway for the Chicago Red Stars

The Chicago Red Stars kicked off their 2020 preseason today with a bunch of familiar faces, and some new ones.

Four of the players are still with the USWNT for the SheBelieves Cup—Alyssa Naeher, Casey Short, Tierna Davidson, and Julie Ertz—who bagged last night’s late-match game winner against Spain. They’ll all report to camp after Wednesday’s USWNT match against Japan.

Five new draft picks are joining the team for preseason—defenders Julia Bingham (University of Southern California), Camryn Biegalski (University of Wisconsin) and Aerial Chavarin (Yale University), and midfielders Zoe Morse (University of Virginia) and Ella Stevens (Duke University).

Three more were called in from February’s tryouts—midfielder Jaci Jones, midfielder Arianna Veland, and forward Brenna Lovera.

Head Coach Rory Dames also invited several non-roster players, including goalkeeper Ella Dederick, defenders Julie Lester, Mary Meehan, and Lauren Sajewich, midfielder Cassie Rohan, and forwards Maddie Pokorny, Zoe Redei and Taylor Timko.

It appears the team’s new forward Kealia Ohai is now going by Kealia Watt, after her recent marriage to NFL star JJ Watt.

The Red Stars take on DePaul University this weekend in a closed scrimmage. They’ll travel to Madison, Wis. for a match against the University of Wisconsin on March 25. That one is at Breese Stevens Field, home of USL League One men’s side Forward Madison FC, and will be open to the public.
