The 2000 edition of the Chicago Fire was one of the best in club history, narrowly missing out on a second MLS Cup win in three seasons because of a ridiculous, 10-save performance from Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola in that season’s final.
The 2000 season opened with a loss to the Dallas Burn that saw Hristo Stoichkov score twice in his Fire debut. TUDN is airing that Fire-Burn match tonight as part of its nightly “Lo Mejor de MLS” series. It’s on at 5 p.m. CT.
More Chicago soccer news
The Chicago Red Stars were supposed to host their home opener this Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium. Obviously, that’s on hold now because of COVID-19, but the club is still planning a “Fauxpening Day” celebration online. It’ll feature a tifo contest, and a Q&A with owner Arnim Whistler and new forward Kealia Ohai Watt. It’s at 3 p.m., and you can RSVP here.
“Who is your favorite teammate, ever?”
The Athletic’s Pablo Maurer and Matt Pentz asked a bunch of current and former MLS players to reveal their favorite teammates ever, and there’s a lot of Fire representation on the list—Dax McCarty, Carlos Bocanegra, DaMarcus Beasley, Jim Curtin, Chris Armas, Josh Wolff and Jesse Marsch are all either interviewed or mentioned as a favorite in the piece. It’s definitely worth a read.
