Chicago Red Stars land Meijer as new shirt sponsor

The team will have the midwest retailer on the front of its jerseys for the NWSL Challenge Cup

The Chicago Red Stars announced today that Meijer will be the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor for the upcoming NWSL Challenge Cup in Utah. Meijer will appear on both the blue “Elevated Kit” and the new, white “Neighborhood Kit.”

It’s a massive get for the club, which had been struggling with little revenue coming in during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Meijer has been working tirelessly serving the community as an essential business, and now they are taking a stand in supporting the future of women’s professional sports. We thank them and are proud to wear their brand,” club owner Arnim Whisler said in the news release announcing the deal.

Meijer will appear in white lettering on the blue shirt, and in red lettering on the white—both blending in well on the popular jerseys. Many times sponsors can ruin the front of a great jersey. In this case, Meijer works well on both.

Meijer is also a midwest-based company, so it makes perfect sense as a Red Stars sponsor.

The news release doesn’t indicate if the partnership will run beyond the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. The Red Stars take on the Washington Spirit this Saturday night on CBS All Access.
