When the Chicago Red Stars take on Sky Blue FC in tonight’s NWSL Challenge Cup Semifinal (9 p.m. CT, CBS All Access), it’ll be a matchup of two fairly similar teams, at least on paper.
Both teams have scored only two goals through five games. Both teams have allowed three goals in the tournament. Both teams advanced out of their quarterfinal match by winning on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Here’s where the teams are different: Chicago finds itself in a sixth consecutive NWSL semifinal. Sky Blue was a disaster of a club in recent years, but new leadership has them trending in the right direction. With North Carolina already eliminated, is this the year Chicago finally breaks through and wins a trophy?
The winner will take on the Houston Dash, who defeated the Portland Thorns 1-0 Wednesday off a Rachel Daly goal. Seeing Kealia Watt and Katie Naughton face their old clubs would be fun, but the Red Stars will have to find a way by Sky Blue first.
A couple quick reminders: The Challenge Cup moves to Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah for the semifinals and the final. And, this tournament is doing away with extra time, so if a match is tied after 90 minutes, it goes straight to a penalty shootout.
