Despite a new rumor, it doesn’t appear Gaston Gimenez is leaving the Chicago Fire.
A popular Twitter account that tracks Boca Juniors is claiming the massive Argentinian club is interested in signing Gimenez, who joined the Fire last season from Velez Sarsfield. Boca may well be interested in signing Gimenez, but the Fire aren’t interested in selling.
A club source confirmed that Gimenez regularly receives interest from teams around the world, but there is no way he’ll depart Chicago this winter.

Gimenez is under contract with the Fire through the 2021 season, with a club option for 2022. He’s one of the Fire’s three Designated Players, along with Robert Beric and Ignacio Aliseda. For those that don’t follow Major League Soccer, each MLS club can have up to three Designated Players, whose salaries don’t count against the league’s salary cap.
The 29-year-old was a rock in midfield last season for Chicago, making 18 appearances (17 starts).
Gimenez recently completed a one-time switch of association through FIFA to represent Paraguay. He had previously played for his native Argentina, earning one cap in a friendly in late 2018. He was called in for World Cup qualifiers in October and November.
