After dropping out of the playoff places last weekend, the Chicago Red Stars face a fight to reach the postseason going into the final three matches of the season, starting with a Wednesday night clash with the Orlando Pride at home at 7:00 PM. The match was originally scheduled to be played two weekends ago, but the NWSL suspended play due to the Paul Riley misconduct scandal. The Red Stars are only outside the playoff spots on goal difference, and with only 4 points separating 3rd from 8th place, the race is wide open. The Pride are the team directly below the Red Stars, sitting on 28 points, only one behind the Red Stars.
Julie Ertz and Alyssa Naeher, who are expected to be out for the remainder of the season, are of course unavailable for selection, following injuries sustained during the Tokyo Olympics. Apart from that, the Red Stars do not have any notable absences, though they may have to rotate given the condensed schedule, and the fact that this 6 day period contains 3 matches.
The Pride are in the midst of their own playoff hunt, but will need to claim some points on the road if they want to finish in the top 6. Leading the line for the Pride are USWNT forward Alex Morgan, NWSL golden boot contender Sydney Leroux (who has 8 goals this season), and four-time World Player of the Year winner Marta.
The match will be aired on Paramount+, and tickets are available at SeatGeek Stadium.
