With two games to go, the race for the final playoff spots in the NWSL is ridiculously tight. With their 1-0 win over the Orlando Pride last night off Kealia Watt’s sixth minute volley, the Chicago Red Stars catapulted themselves back into a playoff position, and now have a very good chance at making the postseason.
At the top of the table, the Portland Thorns and OL Reign have separated themselves from the pack, with 40 and 39 points, respectively. The top two finishers automatically advance to the semifinals, with the next four teams entering a playoff for the final two semifinal spots.
Here’s how things stand right now:
3. Washington Spirit - 22 MP - 33 PTS
4. Houston Dash - 22 MP - 32 PTS
5. Chicago Red Stars - 22 MP - 32 PTS
6. North Carolina Courage - 22 MP - 32 PTS
————
7. Gotham FC - 20 MP - 29 PTS
8. Orlando Pride - 22 MP - 28 PTS
FiveThirtyEight gives the Red Stars an 84 percent chance of making the postseason, then it’s a 40 percent chance to make the semis, a 14 percent chance at the final, and a long shot, 7 percent chance at the title. But anyone can beat anyone. Get in, and you have a chance.
The Red Stars host the league’s worst team, Kansas City, in the regular season home finale this Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview. The final regular season match is Oct. 29 at Exploria Stadium against Orlando.
