Chicago Red Stars vs. Portland Thorns: NWSL Gameday Guide and How to Watch

The Red Stars will open the NWSL season with a clean slate.

Shaina Benhiyoun

The Chicago Red Stars will open the regular season tonight at Providence Park in Portland with a match against the NWSL Challenge Cup champion Thorns.

The Red Stars went winless through four games in the Challenge Cup, only registering three goals in total and only picking up two points. The Thorns won the tournament with a penalty shootout win over Gotham FC last week. This game, which will be both teams’ first NWSL regular season match since 2019, will be played at 6:00 PM CT.

The Red Stars should have their full squad available for this game, including Morgan Gautraut who was one of the standout performers in the Red Stars’ most recent match, a 3-2 loss against OL Reign. Mallory Pugh, who scored the first goal, should also be available, despite some fitness issues in recent months.

The Thorns should prove a challenging opponent, with a roster boasting names such as Christine Sinclair, Crystal Dunn, Lindsey Horan, Becky Sauerbrunn, and Sophia Smith.

The game will be streamed on the NWSL’s official Twitch channel.

There will be limited attendance at Providence Park for this match.
