Sifting through the wreckage of the Fire’s worst performance of the year

The big story from Saturday, the one no one can shut up about, is Chris Wondolowski becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in Major League Soccer. Wondo is a legend, Wondo is an icon, blah blah blah.

I don’t want to take too much away from Wondo’s achievement (except I kinda do) but this is a perfect example of one of the knock-on effects of not winning. When you chronically underachieve, you lose control over your own stories. You’ll get tut-tutting thinkpieces later on, but in the immediate aftermath, the stories end up being about your opposition. Even if you win, the story isn’t that you won; it’s that your opponents lost. To you, of all people.

This team needs to tell better stories about itself. To do that, they need to win.

In the meantime, these are the stories we get. Here’s what we learned from Quakes 4-1 Fire.

Tired And Emotional

Probably the thing that struck me most about the game was how gassed everyone looked.

Given that it’s only May, and there was no midweek fixture to juggle, there’s no reason why anyone should’ve been tired. Even with the cross-country travel. But the team— and the back line in particular— all looked like they had just been woken up from a nap that lasted a little too long.

I’m not sure how this technical staff allows players to run out onto the pitch despite not being entirely match fit and still keeps their jobs, but here we are.

The Defense Still Has Some Glaring Deficiencies

On balance, the Fire likely would’ve lost this game no matter what. But letting Wondo put four past them is an utter failure of the back line.

Francisco Calvo ball-watching on the first goal. The defense leaving David Ousted to solve a problem on its own— who then made some supremely bad decisions to let in the second goal. Bad positioning and a professional foul that failed to actually kill the play led to the third goal. More bad positioning and a failure to protect and support the goalkeeper allowed the fourth.

Three clean sheets in a row was good, but we all knew the team couldn’t keep it up forever. Yet offering such a hapless and pathetic surrender like they did against San Jose is simply unconscionable.

Niko Is Creating More Problems Than He’s Solving

We fretted a lot about Nemanja Nikolic in the beginning of the season. While acknowledging that he had valid reasons for not being in top form when the 2019 campaign began— not least of which was his wife having a kid— there was still cause for concern with his lack of production. Some of our readers— and others who pointedly don’t read our coverage but have opinions about it nonetheless— voiced outrage over our position.

I’m not going to say I Told You So, if for no other reason than this is absolutely not a thing any of us here at Hot Time ever wanted to be right about. But the fact of the matter is that Niko can’t hit the broad side of a barn, and I’m not sure if it’s actually going to get better.

His missed sitter near the end of the first half— a header from three yards out into a nearly empty net that somehow still flew over the crossbar— could, in isolation, be viewed as a fluke. Shit Happens, you could say. But there have been just a few too many of these kind of misses this season. This isn’t just bad timing and it’s not just circumstances. Nikolic has regressed.

In a functional club, the head coach and the technical staff would be having difficult conversations about what to do about this situation, with several contingencies, including benching one of their star DPs, on the table. As it is, the Fire are just going to stick with him and hope things work out.

That’s not good enough anymore. But here we are.

Welcome to the Wondo Show

We were feeling too good.

Last week’s wins over the Revs and Loons prepared us for the opposite of what happened at the Avaya Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Fire were flying high all week leading up to the match with the Quakes. Despite the missing Nico Gaitán and Bastian Schweinsteiger, the Fire had the momentum. Not even the dreary weather (both in Chicago and in San Jose) nor the lack of Djordje Mihailovic, the Fire’s most creative player available. And it wasn’t like Chris Wondolowski, now 36 and a shell of his former glory was doing anything this season. It would take either a poor performance or massive negligence for the Fire to come away with nothing.

They had both.

The Fire gifted Wondo the MLS goal scoring record with two horrible defensive plays. On his first goal, the Fire’s newest disaster Francisco Calvo got caught ball watching. As Shea Salinas cut back toward the middle of the field, not only did Calvo lose Wondo, but he also shuffled himself in the opposite direction of the rest of his back line. So he lost his mark, and kept his mark onside. And Wondo had all the time in the world to put the ball in the back of the net. That goal tied the record.

The second one was the literal worst. Earlier in the season, I wondered if the goalkeeping problem was systemic. And I can’t help but think of that after what happened. Two minutes and change into the second half, a cross came in from Cristian Espinoza on the left. It was one of those hopeful balls. Too deep and too floaty to do much of anything.

You see these all the time. The goalkeeper catches them, or it goes over the end line for a goal kick. These balls are harmless. For some inexplicable reason, David Ousted decided that he didn’t need to catch the ball on the fly. Instead, he decided to knock the ball down to the ground to control it better or something. Except there was one problem. Chris Wondolowski was right next to him. He took advantage and toe poked it into the net. The 2-0 lead, and Landon Donovan’s record was his.

It never got better. The brand new record holder would go on to score twice more before he was subbed off in second half stoppage time. The third was a banger scored on advantage, and Marcelo committed a potential denial of a goal scoring opportunity on Espinoza. Wondo kept running toward the ball and burred it in the top corner of the far post.

His fourth came after a diving stop sent Ousted’s face into the post. The rebound was cut back inside and Wondo found it, and put it into the empty net.

Aleksander Katai managed to save some dignity with a goal in garbage time. As most Katai goals do, this one came from absolutely nowhere. He ripped the shot from thirty yards out. The worm burner took a deflection off of a San Jose defender and went in. There was no celebration.

The Fire got out played, out energy’d and out coached. The players brought in to replace their missing superstars, Bronico and Marcelo, were particularly noticeable in their absence. Bronico had no effect on the match was invisible until he came off for Mo Adams in the second half. Marcelo looked like he wasn’t match fit, which makes sense. He was questionable up until the lineup card had him in the XI, and coming back from a groin injury is never easy.

Nemanja Nikolic still can’t score the easiest of chances. He had two today in front of an open net and missed both. It’s getting to the point now where he’s becoming a liability on the pitch. If he can’t score goals, the club needs to find someone who can.

The Fire got a wake up call this weekend. There’s more work to do if they want to have a hope of making the playoffs. It all came crumbling down. Lets see if they can pick up the pieces.

The Chicago Fire (4-4-5, 16 points) are back home next Saturday when they take on NYCFC.

There was only once choice.

If one bright spot to be had in the Fire’s absolute destruction at the hands of the San Jose Earthquakes, it was Aleksander Katai. He was consistently dangerous with his runs and scored the Fire’s lone goal of the game. Plus, he played hard all 90 minutes.

The Fire will have to try and get a result on the road despite missing some key members of the squad

There aren’t a whole lot of teams in the league that are objectively worse than the Fire. San Jose are definitely one of them.

Not by a whole lot, mind you. But enough that, all things being equal, expecting a win wouldn’t be a totally unreasonable thing.

But all things aren’t equal. Bastian Schweinsteiger is out this week thanks to accumulated yellow cards. Nico Gaitán is, as I’m sure you’ve heard by now, on the shelf for at least a few games with a hamstring injury. That means the Fire are going to be at maybe 70% strength this weekend. Enough to make this a nearly even contest.

So on the one hand, that’s a pretty dubious position to be in. On the other hand, if the Fire are serious about fighting for a playoff spot this year, this is exactly the kind of game they need to get a result from. If their 70% isn’t better than San Jose’s 100%, then they can’t just blame dropped points on Basti and Gaitán being out.

Tomorrow is a test. I really hope they’re ready for it.

One of each from the past three games, good for four points from nine. So, a bit all over the place.

Ousted; Corrales, Kappelhof, Calvo, Frankowski; McCarty, Adams; Katai, Mihailovic, Sapong; Nikolic

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mo Adams gets the short straw again this week, but otherwise I feel like this is pretty close to what the actual lineup will be tomorrow.

Keys To The Match

Keep It Tight: The Fire’s defending has gotten better recently. A lot better. So much so that they’ve kept a clean sheet for three games running. There’s honestly no reason that they can’t do it again this weekend. It’s going to be a little tougher without Basti, but they can do it.

Keep It Moving: Passing and movement off the ball is also going to be key to getting a result against the Quakes. The Fire will, of course, be at a disadvantage without Gaitán. But with the Fire’s midfield— and especially with Katai out wide— they should still be able to win that aspect of the game.

Keep It 100: Oh yeah, and score some goals. Thanks in advance.

I still stand by that prediction, but I’m not quite as sure about it a few days on. I think a 1-0 win is entirely possible too.
