Chicago gets a win on the road and rises to the top of the table

The Chicago Red Stars beat Houston Dash on Sunday to earn themselves their first road win of the season and are sitting in first place in the league. While it’s far too early to be concerned with NWSL standings, there’s something that feels entirely bad-ass about being on top of the table with the first six weeks settled and the World Cup break currently ahead of us.

This was Chicago’s final match with their star striker in Sam Kerr, and her final pre-world cup performance didn’t disappoint. A pair of goals from Kerr, with assists from Vasconcelos and DiBernardo, the Red Stars recent win gave us lots to watch.

Here’s some things we learned.

Getting in Formation

As so much of the first half of 2018 showed us, Chicago’s roster is no stranger to making adjustments. Before they closed out the first quarter of this current season, the Red Stars monitored minutes for Morgan Brian and Vanessa DiBernardo, and said eventual early World Cup goodbyes to U.S. Internationals Alyssa Naeher, Julie Ertz, Tierna Davidson, and Brian.

They most recently had to plan for a red card suspension to Katie Johnson, and suffered an unexpected loss when long time veteran Alyssa Mautz suffered a season ending ACL injury.

They adjusted for Utah, and unfortunately fell in the 84th minute. Re-adjusted for North Carolina, and won. Adjusted again for Houston, and won again.

From Vasconcelos earning starts after having such immediate impacts off the bench, to Nikki Stanton sliding into the midfield providing the grind and grunge, including a confident Rookie debut from Maria Sanchez - have all been some examples of Chicago's reliable depth.

As the next few weeks approach, we might see the Red Stars stay in a 4-3-3, or they might not. Either way, they are looking like a team with the kind of personnel that can adjust if need be.

Ok But This Goal, WOW

DiBernardo is back playing full match minutes, and her efforts throughout the match were beyond noticeable.

When she was able to help navigate the mid, the Red Stars were vicious. When she saw less time on the ball, they looked like less of a threat. The give-and-go between her on and Kerr on this goal looked effortless.

It was a five touch sequence initiated by Dibernardo that occured before she connected with Kerr for the second goal of the game, which would ultimately be the game winner.

This match marked 100 caps for DiBernardo as a Red Star, here’s hoping for more of these moments from Chicago’s captain.

Chicago is the real deal this year, what a blessing and what a curse

Houston Dash 1 (Huerta 26’)

Chicago Red Stars 2 (Kerr 8’, 13’)

I think everyone knew that Chicago’s first game against Sofia Huerta’s Houston Dash was likely to be a humbling experience, one way or another. But what played out in a humid BBVA Compass Stadium on Sunday night felt like less of a wasted opportunity and more like a whole new world.

The Red Stars got away with a 2-1 win, and cemented a relationship to the rest of the league that feels like something wholly new and different to what we’ve seen in the past.

Last year, Chicago had to just hang on, #scamgang style, long enough to give themselves a chance to gather points before their full starting XI could make it back from injury to make a run into the post-season. Even when they started to meld, the team stuck to a large number of draws to get the point total high enough to start gunning for wins.

It worked last year, to a certain extent, but that’s simply not where Chicago is right now. This team is walking into every game with a chance to win, even more so with the talent they have staying home from the World Cup, as other teams’ best players start to leave.

But in a game like this one against Houston, a stronger overall position isn’t necessarily the more comfortable one to be in. Long gone are the days of underestimating this squad, and lesser teams are coming at them to disrupt, to take shots, and to steal points from a roster that can play really beautiful soccer when they’ve got a grasp on a game.

Some of that comes from personnel. Some of that comes from formation. And some of that comes from a common gripe about the NWSL as a whole: physicality. Houston isn’t losing any Americans to the World Cup, but they’ve lost quite a few Canadians already. And Rachel Daly, arguably their best player, has both feet out the door after a red card suspension from last weekend, bleeding into what would have been her final game with the club before the big break.

With Daly out, Chicago looked to contain Houston with Casey Short smothering Kealia Ohai on the wing, and letting the Dash send balls in to their rookie Kayla McCoy at the nine spot in lieu of more dangerous chances from Ohai or Huerta. That mostly worked, especially in the first 20 minutes of the match that saw the Red Stars completely overwhelm their opponent.

Sam Kerr got on the board early, as her emerging partnership with Michele Vasconcelos continued, with the latter sending a beautiful ball to split Houston’s defense and put Kerr on goal, beating Jane Campbell and getting the Red Stars on the board. Just four minutes later, Kerr would double the lead after a give-and-go with Vanessa DiBernardo, sticking with the play after a half-tackle from the Dash backline, and it looked like Chicago was running away with this one early.

But those kinds of starts usually lead the way for thornier and more complicated matches, and Chicago started to sharply fade in the last 20 minutes of the half, due to the Houston heat and the fragmented psychology of holding a two-goal lead so early. I don’t think the Red Stars have done very well to close out the first half of many of their matches this year, losing possession and trying their luck at defending, but it was no shock when who but Sofia Huerta succeeded in getting Houston a goal back in the 26th minute.

Chicago did well to survive the end of the first half, and struggled in the first 20 minutes of the second as well, but once the Red Stars made it to the hour mark things started to calm down. Huerta did her best to ignite her team, understanding that nothing was getting past Short, and driving attacks on Arin Wright’s side of the field. But the reality of this moment is that Chicago, even depleted from World Cup absences, is more equipped to find answers to this sort of a game than Houston is. It leaves us in whole new territory.

There are certain heartbeats to an NWSL match. Wonder strikes, crunching tackles, and mischief around the midfield line all come into play as teams look for an advantage. But those scenarios feel very specific to the type of soccer each team is trying to play, and the gamesmanship feels worse or better accordingly. In their history, Chicago is absolutely not above having to take some tough fouls to try to give their team a shot.

But wow, how weird and how wonderful to be on the other side of the looking glass now. Houston dumped multiple Red Stars to the ground to try to figure out how to unlock the match a few times in the second half, and the officials didn’t give Chicago a ton of relief from that. But it ended up not mattering, and the stronger team won out.

It wouldn’t have been shocking if the Dash had found a way to sneak a point from this one, and fair play to them. But the Red Stars are starting to play with the confidence of a team that’s in the upper echelon of this league. This is new, and scary, but what better way to push higher than ever before.

The Chicago Red Stars (3W 2D 1L, 11pts, 1st place) return home next Sunday to take on Washington.

The Red Stars looking for their first road win in Texas

The Chicago Red Stars hit the road this week as they prepare to take on Houston Dash. The Red Stars are in search of their first road win, and will try to make it happen in Houston.

Chicago is coming off a 3-1 win over reigning champs North Carolina Courage, thanks to goals from Sam Kerr and Michele Vasconcelos. This will be the final match for Kerr before she heads off for World Cup duty with Australia. Katie Johnson will also return from her red card suspension.

This will be the Red Stars’ first match against the Dash this season, who will also be missing some international players of their own.

Where We Last Saw Them

Chicago and Houston played each other over a year ago back on May 12, 2018. The match took place prior to a 3 team trade that sent Taylor Comeau and Sofia Huerta to Houston. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Bridgeview, with Kerr getting the Red Stars opening goal and Huerta converting on a penalty kick for the equalizer. It was Huerta’s final goal as a Red Star before the trade occurred in June.

Starting Lineup We’d Like To See

With the return of Johnson and the last Pre-World Cup match for Kerr, we’d like to see the duo get one more game together with Nagasato before the entire league goes through a stretch of weeks missing some international stars. Vanessa DiBernardo went a full 90 for Chicago last week, and we’d love to see her back in the 10 for the Red Stars.

Close Out The Quarter: As we approach week 6 in the league, we close out the first quarter of the season. Red Stars head into match day settled into the top tier. While they have two wins to date, Red Stars have yet to string those wins together. Last game with their star striker is a good opportunity to show they are capable of doing that on the road in the swell of Texas heat.

Run The Mid: While the Red Stars said their World Cup goodbyes to Julie Ertz and Morgan Brian, Vanessa Dibernardo and Danielle Colaprico are still waving hello. Prior to this season, Houston Dash were being praised for their mostly intact roster, but they have lost key players in recent weeks. Internationally, they’ve said goodbye to several Canadians (Lindsay Agnew, Allysha Chapman, Nichelle Prince, Sophie Schmidt) and now arguably their best player thus far in Rachel Daly (England) - who will be missing this match due to a Red Card suspension. Add to that some tragic injury losses in Veronica Latsko (OUT) and an ankle injury to Kyah Simon, who is listed as Questionable. The Dash appear to be vulnerable and Red Stars will want to take advantage of the Schmidt-less mid and Daly-less backline.

Players To Watch

Chicago Red Stars: After her first 90 minute game, we want to see even more of Vanessa DiBernardo. The potentially rainy and humid weather means we’re looking for another big performance from Emily Boyd.

Houston Dash: Have we mentioned that Sofia Huerta used to play for the Red Stars? So yeah, we’ll all be watching. Can’t forget Kealia Ohai who is always an offensive threat.
