The more things change, the more they stay the same

It was a real Jekyl and Hyde week for the Chicago Fire. After drubbing Atlanta 5-1 on Wednesday, they lost a 1-0 snoozer to Sporting Kansas City.

Here’s what we learned.

Unfulfilled Potential

Wednesday night was sublime. Three goals in 14 minutes. The floodgates had opened against a quality opponent in the five stripes, and the Fire were finally making good— turning their expected goals into actual goals. CJ Sapong continued his wonderful form, scoring a brace in what had to be one of his better performances in a Fire shirt. Nico Gaitán had what had to be considered his best game since he joined the team. And to cap the night, Fabian Herbers making his first start capped off the evening of scoring with a goal of his own. The Fire were looking like they were turning the corner on the season, that maybe after all, there was a chance to make something of the season.

Than Saturday came.

Sporting Kansas City was the exact opposite of Wednesday. The club were listless, limp and ineffective. They couldn’t string three passes together, and mostly everyone was poor. Even in their most dangerous of moments, the players looked uncoordinated and uncomfortable. It was like they’ve never played together before. Everything looked so wrong and so far away from the delight of seventy two hours ago that it boggles the mind that they’re the same football team.

The biggest shame is that this isn’t the first time this has happened this year. That aforementioned Colorado game where they won 4-1? That was followed up with the now second worst performance of the season in the Bronx against NYCFC, and that carried over to the match against Montreal the week after. If the pattern holds, and there’s no reason to see that it wouldn’t, FC Cincinnati is going to be hell this weekend. And the What If’s will keep being asked.

On Left Backs

The problem with not having a natural fit at any given position is that there will be trade-offs between all the players that play there. Plug in a midfielder, say, Jorge Corrales or Jeremiah Gutjahr, you lose something defensively. The idea with this band-aid is that they’re comfortable playing on the left while in attack. Their offensive potential from overlapping runs and crossing ability will outweigh their defensive liability and that their athleticism can cover that portion of the game well enough for the center backs can come help.

On the flipside, playing another defender on that side means sacrificing the attack. With someone like Grant Lillard and Francisco Calvo, the idea is that the offense will be just fine without the help from your fullbacks, and are talented enough to play without the threat of long runs on the wing or the extra body in attack that those runs provide.

The Fire are in a position where they need both.

The offense isn’t good enough or creative enough to create opportunities without making use of the overlapping runs from fullbacks. That isn’t really a knock on the Men in Red, though. A lot of very good teams rely on those runs to create the necessary space for their actual offensive players to work, and the Fire are no different.

The defense makes too many mistakes to risk playing a non-defender there. I’ve lost count at the amount of times opposing teams have taken advantage of Fire midfielders being played out of position.

The Fire are damned if they do and damned if they don’t when it comes to left back, and it’s their own fault.

Fabian Herbers

Fabian Herbers is a striker, but not one of the glamorous ones. He’s not flashy or has it in him to score the spectacular goal. He’s more Michael de Leeuw or Alex Morgan instead of a Sam Kerr or Zlatan Ibrahimovic. In a sense, that makes him perfect to play in the Djordje Mihailovic role that he’s been playing in since DM has left for the Gold Cup.

He’s impressed me with his work rate and has done a decent job of shutting down opposing playmakers while being dangerous in attack when he gets an opportunity. I’m certain he’ll be relegated back to the bench when Djordje comes back and is reintegrated with the squad, probably as soon as this week vs Cincy. But I think he’s earned more playing time, and I expect to see his number called more often off the bench.

The Fire regress to the mean with a limp performance on the road against SKC

Sporting Kansas City 1 Croizet 14’

Chicago Fire 0

One of the worst things about being a fan of the Chicago Fire Soccer Club is that you get to a point where you stop expecting anything better.

I don’t know why I held out even modest hope of the Fire capitalizing on their shock beatdown win over Atlanta United in midweek. I don’t know why even a small part of me thought they could at least get a draw, and maybe even a win. I don’t know why I ever thought the turning point would be now. Or that there would be a turning point this season.

At some point you just have to own up to what this team actually is. And doing that hurts. But it would hurt either way, probably.

I’ll admit that my heart skipped a beat when the lineup was announced.

Grant Lillard was in the Starting XI.

Whatever else happened tonight, I was happy.

And that’s important for any fan, really. You have to find small morsels of joy wherever you can with this team. They’re oh so fleeting, and you’ll never be able to hang on to them for long, but you need to find them and hold them where and when you’re able. So it was that the joy of seeing Lillard in the lineup lasted all of 14 minutes into the game, when yet another Kenneth Kronholm error cost the Fire. Yohan Croizet capitalized on Kronholm rushing way out into No Man’s Land to bag the opening goal for the hosts.

But it wasn’t just the early conceded goal. Early on it became clear that the team that beat Atlanta on Wednesday did not make their flight to KC for tonight.

The Fire showed some faint signs of life in the first half— Nico Gaitán’s near-miss just after the half-hour mark stands out— but never enough to give them a material advantage. They went into halftime down a goal and looking short on ideas.

Things didn’t improve much in the second half. Chicago caught a few lucky breaks but couldn’t convert. KC nearly made it 2-0 just before the hour mark when Felipe Gutiérrez shot wide of an empty net from close range. This was going to get worse for the Fire before it got better.

“Worse,” in this case, turned out to be a lethargic and borderline apathetic performance. KC didn’t have to work too hard to fend off Chicago, and the Fire didn’t demonstrate much of a sense of urgency.

By the end of the 90, the Fire were getting bad ref calls and picking fights with SKC players. Bastian Schweinsteiger looked like he wanted to stab people. (Basti did get a late yellow card and will miss next week’s game due to accumulation.) It was a mess. A boring, stupid mess.

Needless to say, the Fire failed to get back in it or even so much as threaten an equalizer. SKC held on for the 1-0 win. Chicago fly back home as the same team we’ve been watching all season— listless, disorganized, and doomed to come up short.

The Chicago Fire (5W 7D 8L, 22pts, 9th place) are back at home next Saturday when they host FC Cincinnati.

The Fire look to ride their high into Kansas City

I want to believe.

I want to think that Wednesday’s destruction of the five stripes is the real version of this team. I want to believe that, much like the final boss in a Square Enix game, that this team has transformed into a more powerful more terrifying version of themselves. the real boss has been revealed and it takes all the effort and knowledge gained from the 50+ hours of gameplay has granted for the player to beat them.

The problem is, with both video game analogy and the 2019 Chicago Fire, is that they’re designed to lose. The Fire, much like game bosses, have a fatal flaw, an area designed for the opposition to take advantage in order to win. For the Fire this year, it’s been the defense. The lack of natural fullbacks on this roster has forced midfielders and center backs to learn how to defend- something that takes years of experience to learn- in six weeks to three months.

We’ve beaten this horse to death and then-some, but it still bares repeating because until something changes I’ll never feel confident enough to say that the Fire have turned the corner on the season— even with the performance against Atlanta,

I wan’t to believe, but I just can’t.

Sporting Kansas City are in an interesting spot. They lost their last game to LAFC by the same scoreline that the Fire beat ATL, 5-1, and they’ve won only once in their last 5 MLS league games, a win against a 10 player Columbus. Before that, there last win came on May 26th— a 3-2 win at home against Seattle Sounders.

Suggested Lineup

It’s the exact same lineup as Wednesday’s shellacking of Atlanta United. It worked. Keep doing it

Keys To The Match

Keep Scoring: Wednesday was a welcome sight. Finally, after three months of extreme inefficiency in front of goal, the floodgates opened and the goals finally came. It was glorious. Chances were finally going in, and even got a bit of luck go their way with the handball and red card.

That has to continue Saturday night. The goals must keep coming if not at the same rate, but with the same sort of verve. Sporting KC just came out on the wrong side of a 5-1 scoreline, themselves. So, we know that their defense can be had. The Fire need to take advantage of this and continue to score goals.

Discipline: The offense had their breakout game on Wednesday, so now it’s time for the defense to have theirs. Buried in the 5-1 win was the fact the D gave up a pretty dumb penalty that if the Fire’s offence weren’t finding the back of the net (as we have been accustomed to this season) probably wins the game for Atlanta; or at least, sparks a comeback. Stop making stupid plays, stay compact, and be where you need to be. I’d really like a clean sheet tomorrow.

Control the Game: I know the possession numbers are skewed a bit due to the red card, but before it the Fire were still controlling the game. The fire were utterly dominant in the first ten minutes, with the possession percentage hovering around sixty. This team is better when they have the ball, and their chances of winning go up with their possession number.

Just as important is their passing completion percentage. It was at or around ninety percent all game on Wednesday, and you could see the confidence building with every completed pass. That’s the attitude they need to bring to every match, if they want to win more games.

Final Thoughts

If the Fire play like they did on Wednesday, they walk all over SKC. But I’m still not sure if they’re capable of that on a night in night out basis. After they 4-1’d the Rapids, they went to New York and let NYCFC do whatever they wanted. I worry that that could happen again.

My prediction: 3-2 Fire.
