Can only go up from here, right?

The Chicago Fire lost a game they should’ve won. It’s not the first time this has happened in 2019. It almost certainly won’t be the last. But somehow, losing at home to the worst team in the league— a team that had a GA of 44 heading into the game— really, really stings. Probably the biggest takeaway here is that, no matter how much you manage your expectations, the Fire will always find a way to let you down.

Here’s what else we learned from Fire 1-2 Cincy.

Nico Gaitán Will Not Save Us

There’s no denying that the Fire are a better team with Nico Gaitán on the pitch. Their forward movement and passing is better. They look more dangerous on set pieces. They create more opportunities. By most measures, Gaitán is a decent pick-up.

But “better” doesn’t necessarily mean “good.”

Gaitán has clear flaws in his game— several of which were exposed in the loss to Cincinnati. He missed two penalties, and only scored because he got lucky on the rebound for that second penalty. And that goal was the only one the Fire could manage— which, for all that he was hailed as a South American trequartista with experience in Europe, seems downright galling.

The Fire needed a player to come in an transform this team into a legitimately dangerous one. It’s clear now that, as skilled as he is, Nico Gaitán is not that player.

Wasting Opportunities

We talk so much about the Fire creating so many goalscoring opportunities and being unable to finish them we could practically start a whole podcast about it. No other game this season has emphasized this problem so keenly.

As Ruben noted in his recap, FC Cincinnati did their level best to hand three points over to the Fire, and the Fire repeatedly declined. That may be the most frustrating things about this team right now; they have the talent, they have the motivation, they’ve even had some decent luck, but they just cannot take advantage of any of it. It’s like this team is allergic to success.

There’s no real takeaway here in the sense that a lesson can be learned and used to improve going forward. But it’s still worthwhile to name the problem.

We’ve Officially Hit Bottom

Every bad Fire season has a At Least It Can’t Get Any Worse point. Last year’s nadir came around this same time— mid July, when the Fire lost 4-3 at home to Philadelphia, with David Accam scoring the game winner, in the middle of an ongoing boycott by Section 8.

The loss to Cincy is probably the low point in 2019. Losing at home to the worst team in the league is just too awful to take in stride. It’s hard to imagine how things could get better for this team, but it probably won’t get much worse.

Then again, I could be wrong. The thing about hitting rock bottom is that it’s supposed to be good for you. That’s what all the self-help books say, at any rate. Being at your lowest point is what lets you turn things around. The problem is that the Fire keep hitting low points and not meaningfully getting better afterward. So either we haven’t yet hit rock bottom— which is a terrifying thought for anyone who follows this team— or the Fire are just sort of stuck near the bottom forever.

I’m not sure which is worse. But that’s where we are.

The Fire fall to the worst team in the league

Chicago Fire 1 Gaitán 45’+4

FC Cincinnati 2 Cruz 1’, Adi 82’

I wrote in my column this week that the reason everything feels bad about the Fire is that we should be feeling the exact opposite. Tonight was just another example of that, and it’s infuriating.

The best thing that happened tonight came in the 22nd minute. The referee for tonight, Fotis Bazakos stopped the match and sent the teams to their locker rooms due to lightning in the area. It meant that I was able do in something I’m not used to doing in 2019; watching something entertaining on a Saturday night. I was free for almost an hour to do something other than a watch a Chicago Fire match where they struggled to finish chances and had fallen behind early. And boy did they fall behind early.

Just 45 seconds in, a cross from Leonardo Bertone hit Fabian Herbers in the chest. The ball took him by surprise as it bounced off of him into the path of Allan Cruz, who made a very simple finish look extremely difficult with a jumping roundhouse shot from 3 yards.

From there it was all Fire, but as per usual, what looked good on the stat sheet failed the eye test spectacularly.

10 minutes in, the Fire have 60% possession, 86% pass completion, and are down 1-0. Rinse and repeat. #CHIvCIN #cf97 #MLS
— Hot Time In Old Town (@HotTimeOldTown) July 14, 2019

Things never really got better, and even when things were going right, they managed to find ways to screw it up. Nico Gaitán had a pair of penalties, and missed them both. The first miss, won by a foul on CJ Sapong that needed a VAR check to confirm the penalty, went off the post in the 21st minute— just before the lightning delay.

The second miss came right before halftime. His penalty effort, this time from a handball in the box, was stopped by a diving Spencer Richey. Luckily he coughed up a rebound that went right back to Nico, and the Argentine finally put the ball away in order to tie the match just as the first half expired.

The second half was sloppy by both teams. The ball was wet from all the rain and was slipping around uncontrollably causing both teams to screw up passes. It was hard for one team to keep possession for long periods of time, but by the 70th minute the Fire had taken control again and looked to be the team that was most likely to take the lead and the three points.

And then Fernando Adi checked in. His effect on the game was immediately noticeable. Suddenly, FC Cincy looked like dangerous soccer team. But his form has been off this season and he hadn’t played much since leaving Portland due to injuries. But because it’s the 2019 Chicago Fire he was playing against, of course, he was going to score. In the 83rd minute Kekuta Manneh played him off the left side of the circle at the top of the box, where Adi wasted no time shooting, and a diving Kronholm couldn’t stop it. The Fire were down a goal late to the worst team in the league and they would never recover.

The 2019 season wasn’t supposed to be like this. Despite the worries about coaching and the roster, especially on the defensive side, the Chicago Fire were supposed to have the offensive firepower to mask some of these issues, at least until they could fix them during the summer transfer window.

As we all know now, that’s not how it turned out. This year has been an absolute nightmare. That powerful offense we expected has only showed up twice. Once against Colorado and once against Atlanta. Every other game they’ve either been wasteful,or not shown up at all.

FC Cincinnati did everything it could to try to throw the game away, and the Fire, for whatever reason, couldn’t take advantage. It’s disgusting, and something has to change. There’s a scheduled media roundtable with Nelson Rodriguez scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Maybe something will change.

But don’t hold your breath.

The Chicago Fire (5W 7D 9L, 22 pts, 10th place) are back at it on Wednesday at home when they take on eternal rivals Columbus Crew.

But there were a few good performances hiding in the anger and disappointment. The Hot Time staff have decided to go with Aleksander Katai for his never ending effort and his dangerous attacking play.

The Fire and FCC face off for the first time in league history.

I wish I could be more excited about this game.

It’s the Chicago Fire’s first MLS meeting with FC Cincinnati. Playing a new team for the first time is supposed to be fun. There’s no history, which means no one can say for sure how this will shake out. Anything can happen— at least in theory.

The problem is that this game happened too late in the season. Which is to say— the Fire have all but thrown their season away, and there just isn’t anything left to get excited about. The supposedly historic first game between what could (and should) be two future conference rivals lands this weekend like a fart in an elevator. This is just one more lose-able game. One more night where the Fire we used to know and love slips further away.

Sometimes I really envy fans of other teams who can still get excited for things.

They beat Houston last week, but it broke a lengthy losing streak. Two weeks ago they got manhandled by Minnesota United by a 7-1 scoreline. So, Cincy aren’t exactly in a great place.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is suspended due to yellow card accumulation. Corrales is out. Kappelhof is questionable. This lineup is probably the best the Fire can do with what they’ve got.

Keys To The Match

Goals? In THIS Economy??: That inexplicable Atlanta game notwithstanding, the Fire have had difficulties finding the back of the net this season. They’ve been creating chances, but they haven’t been finishing them. But Cincy have conceded a whopping 44 goals this season, giving them the worst GA stat in MLS by a considerable margin. To put it simply: if the Fire can’t score against this team, then they’re well and truly hopeless.

Hold It Down, Somehow: The Fire will be missing some key members of the squad— most of them defenders, plus a midfielder who everyone is pretending is a defender. The backline was already a little wobbly; now, it’s downright decrepit. The Fire are going to have to figure out some way to keep the defense together. This game could be won or lost by how well the defenders— whoever they may be— can stay on top of things.

Meet Me In The Middle: The Fire used to have one of the strongest midfields in the league. Now? Notsomuch. We know that the middle of the park is a key to success for the Fire, and if they want to start controlling games again, they’ll have to sort their midfield out. Cincy is as good an opponent as any to build some confidence.

I want to be optimistic about this game, but I can’t. I just can’t.
