¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In my preview on Friday I wrote that the Chicago Fire have given us a gift by no longer giving a shit about the season. Their apathy has allowed us fans to release ourselves from the burden of caring about superficial concerns like results or performances or, y’know, the future.

Their 2-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union served to reinforce the value of that gift.

Here are some takeaways from Saturday’s farce.

The Kenneth Kronholm Experiment Is A Total Bust, And It Doesn’t Matter

I realize this isn’t earth-shattering news, but it has to be said. In nine appearances for Chicago, he’s kept zero clean sheets and has been either a direct or indirect cause of dropped points. He makes stupid youth league mistakes. He clearly doesn’t have an open line of communication with his defenders. And he’s also easily duped— as evidence by Philly’s opening goal, coming off a training ground routine that wasn’t even that clever. Nothing about this is working.

But Pauno and N-Rod are committed to this guy, so, whatever I guess.

Our Midfield Is A Mess, And It Doesn’t Matter

Remember when the Fire had the strongest midfield in the league? That was nice. I miss that.

That midfield was built around Bastian Schweinsteiger and Dax McCarty getting their 78th winds late in their careers at about the same time, plus a young third player to round out the triangle. (Initially it was Matt Polster, before he moved out to left back and formed that excellent partnership with Brandon Vincent. Later, it was often filled by Djordje Mihailovic.)

Now it’s all a mess. Basti splits his time between the midfield and the backline, and his declining abilities + mounting frustration with playing on a team that’s stopped giving a shit has made him a shadow of his former self. Dax, who didn’t even start on Saturday, has also had a rough year. Combined with the constant formation changes and it’s turned what was once the team’s biggest strength into a liability.

And nothing is going to change any time soon.

We Can’t Score Anymore, And It Doesn’t Matter

I’m just going to pretend the win against Atlanta United didn’t happen. It’s clear by now that that was a fluke.

Our DP #9, Nemanja Nikolic, can’t be said to be in a slump anymore. This is just who he is now. His form is in the toilet and he’s likely already emotionally checked out.

CJ Sapong is a great addition to the team and is almost certainly one of the few things holding the locker room together right now. But his goal production has also fallen off a cliff, and it’s becoming a problem.

Fabian Herbers is Just Ok. Nico Gaitán has too much on his plate. Djordje’s goalscoring opportunities are limited given his being deployed as a central midfielder. Katai is doing a lot of good work in possession but has also has trouble finding the back of the net. Same with Przemysław Frankowski.

In the absence of these guys’ performance, it’s not clear where else the goals are supposed to come from. It would be a problem if this organization actually cared about winning anymore. But they don’t, so it doesn’t.

The Fire are back in action tomorrow night at home against Cruz Azul in the inaugural Leagues Cup. In other words: a game that doesn’t matter, in a competition that doesn’t matter, hosted by a team that doesn’t matter.

I want another book

Philadelphia Union 2 Fabián 11’, Fontana 65’

Chicago Fire 0

You’d think that we’d be used to this now. This playing even with or better than your opponent and then blowing it with a couple of mistakes thing. And yet here we are, feeling angry, disappointed, dejected, sad. The 2019 Chicago Fire are a never ending nightmare, and I’m running out of metaphors to describe them.

The start was not great from the Fire. From the outset, it was clear who was where in the table, and that they each deserved their place. Philly was in control, and the Men in Red were playing catch-up. Then around the eighth or ninth minute, things started looking up. CJ Sapong made a great run on the left, but his cross was behind both Nemanja Nikolic, making his first start in a while, and Fabian Herbers. It was a good show of intent, and let the Union know they were in for a game.

Everything came crumbling down a minute later. A foul was won on the left side of the Fire penalty area. Instead of putting the ball into the box, Haris Medunjanin played the ball to Kai Wagner, waiting at the top of the box. He made a lateral pass over to Marco Fabián on the perimeter, who had nothing but time and space to direct a rocket of a shot passed everybody, including a diving Kenneth Kronholm.

It was revealed later by head coach Veljko Paunovic during his halftime interview that there was a miscommunication as to who was supposed to close out. It seems from the positioning that it was supposed to be Jorge Corrales, but we can’t say for sure. Regardless, the Fire were once again down early and had to try and find a way back into the match.

I suppose it’s to their credit that they did, for the most part, hang around. The ten minutes following the goal, the Fire were in legit control of the game, but of course, their poor form in front of goal that has dogged them all season was evident again. CJ Sapong missed two opportunities at headers that landed right at Andre Blake’s feet. Francisco Calvo hit a header over the bar, and Diego Campos hit the bar, late.

Philly put the game to bed in the 65th minute when Wagner was able to out maneuver all four Fire defenders, including Grant Lillard who came on for Jorge Corrales as an injury replacement, by going to ground to shield the ball, spinning up, and deflecting a pass off of Johan Kappelhof and onto the foot of Anthony Fontana who did not miss.

Watching this team, thinking about this team, is exhausting. It’s not just tonight. Tonight was predictable. Jim Curtin’s Philidelphia Union are the class of the Eastern Conference. Anything less than full points at home against one of the bottom teams would have been an embarrassment.

What’s exhausting is the piling on of mistake after mistake and bad performance after bad performance. It’s going into every game knowing that the Fire will always do something at some point to sabotage themselves.

It’s the same old story with this club, and I’m ready for a new one.

The Chicago Fire (5W 8D 10L, 23pts, 10th place) are back at it on Tuesday at home when they take on Cruz Azul in the first annual Leagues Cup.

It was a tough choice

In a disappointing, yet predictable outcome, the Fire lost 2-0 to the first place Philadelphia Union. We here at Hot Time had a little conversation, and we decided to name Przemysław Frankowski as our man of the match for his hard work and his good runs with the ball.

After dropping points at home against two of the worst teams in the league, the Fire now head east to take on the Eastern Conference leaders. What could go wrong?

There’s a feeling of lightness you get when you release yourself from the obligation of caring.

In the past week the Fire played two of the worst teams in the league at home. Their results were one loss and one draw. There are only so many conclusions you can draw from that; perhaps the most obvious one is that the Fire are indeed one of the worst teams in the league.

In between those two matches, Fire GM Nelson Rodriguez held a media roundtable and told reporters, in so many words, that Everything Is Fine.

There’s only so many conclusions one can draw from that roundtable. Mine is that no one in a decision-making capacity at the Chicago Fire Soccer Club actually gives a shit about results on the pitch. They don’t win because it’s just not a priority for them.

Honestly, I’m grateful for this past week. The club, through their relentless ineptitude, have given me space to release myself from the obligation of caring about them this season. They don’t give a shit, and their not giving a shit gives me permission to not give a shit. It feels very freeing.

Without this week, I would’ve gone into tomorrow’s clash in Philadelphia, looked at the opposition’s place in the Eastern Conference standings, looked at our own record, and broken out in hives. As it is, I feel light as air. The results don’t matter for the club, so they shouldn’t matter for the rest of us. It’s great.
