bing-bing-bang-booka-booka

Just when you thought you were getting over the last Chicago Red Stars win, they go on the road and get themselves another one. If last weeks’ win was a statement, this latest win is the flex. The one that reminded everyone that the Red Stars know who they are, even if they’re playing soccer that is unfamiliar to you.

The Red Stars headed to Tacoma, Washington to take on Reign FC in an attendance record setting match in the Reign’s new home, Cheney Stadium. Chicago scored four goals on the day, and recorded a shutout as their most recent win has them sitting in third place on the league table.

Here’s some things we learned in the Red Stars most recent win.

The Brightest Star

Every once in awhile we get to witness some dominant performances on the pitch. Fearless play, seamless passing, or pretty goals. Yuki Nagasato, gave fans watching all those things on Sunday as she enchanted us within the first 5 minutes of the match.

Her play on the ball led to an opening goal from Arin Wright, while her own goal - a leaping redirected shot assisted by Casey Short - is currently up for Goal of the Week.

Nagasato kicked off this season picking up where she left off last year with assisting on Sam Kerr goals and scoring her own. As the Red Stars went through a rough patch of games during the World Cup, Nagasato’s work rate didn’t slow down, as she started every game, and tried to generate offense. Despite the team not getting wins, her ability to facilitate an offensive attack was still present in games that didn’t produce goals during their losing streak.

“That was yuki’s best game of the year. Yuki works in mysterious ways,” said Head Coach Rory Dames in post game comments. “Her willingness to come get involved and find the pockets between when to go out and when come in was really good tonight.”

Chicago has a club that is home to two of the biggest stars produce superior soccer performances right now in Julie Ertz and Sam Kerr. But beyond the dominant athleticism on the roster, they lay claim to one of soccer’s most brilliant minds in Nagasato.

We run plays, this shit a sport

The midfield over the last two games have navigated the type of soccer that the Red Stars have been striving for over the last year or so.

“This week we really connected. Playing North Carolina as our first game back from the World cup it was just so much running [. . .] and I think kind of having that win gave us a lot of confidence going into this game,” said Ertz in post game comments.

The return of Morgan Brian and Ertz partnered with Vanessa DiBernardo has paved a way for the Red Stars to establish and control the tempo of their most recent wins.

“I think the really fun thing about playing with V and Moe in the middle is that we’ve been able to kind of interchange, depending on what the games give us,” said Ertz.

“I was able to kind of go and be a 10 slot at times as well which is definitely fun. So, as a midfielder with kind of free range - and a lot of confidence from the coaches - that allowed us to kind of see what the game gives us.”

You Know You My Favorite Shooter

Goals. There were four of them. By four different players. They were all ridiculously dope. You should watch them all again.

I...don’t really know what to say

This was a complaint I had two weeks ago, not having the words to describe where the Red Stars are at in this developing NWSL season.

Friends, I am now having trouble describing this turnaround.

The Red Stars went to Tacoma, played against the largest crowd in Reign FC history, and put on an attacking showcase we haven’t seen for months. Four goals, none conceded, back in third place, a truly dominant performance. I’m struggling for words.

So, in lieu of balanced analysis, how about something different. I’ve used this medium to air my lists of complaints, so let’s get ready for some superlatives.

Sam Kerr connected with teammates throughout the match, facilitating movement up front and assisting Vanessa DiBernardo’s goal with a no-look pass right out of Steph Curry’s playbook. She also got a cheeky goal of her own in the 81st minute, making a crossing run within the Reign defense to slot back her 11th goal of the season. And DiBernardo, what a streak she is having, all on a questionable hip. Her late run for Chicago’s second goal was a beauty, and she moved further forward with a confidence we haven’t seen from her since before the World Cup.

Arin Wright? What a shift. She pursued Yuki Nagasato’s early shot in the 4th minute to tally in Chicago’s first goal, inexplicably her first in the league, before shifting back into left back after Tierna Davidson was subbed in the second half. On her own, Nagasato had her best game in weeks, causing trouble on the left side for the first 15 minutes, and getting a goal of her own in the 51st minute off a cross from Casey Short. Casey Short! She took a knock in the early going, and gutted through the rest of the match knowing that she had some teammates sitting on planned substitutions.

Ok, let’s keep going. Morgan Brian. She’s completely transformed the Chicago midfield, looking healthier than she has in a long time. She’s firmly sat in that no. 8 role with Julie Ertz behind her (don’t worry, we’ll get to Julie Ertz), and she made everyone around her better. At her core, Brian is a possessor, and she makes runs that makes DiBernardo and Nagasato more comfortable in that part of Chicago’s game, and she instigated a number of the Red Stars’ looks at goal on Sunday afternoon.

Julie Ertz. The commentary called her underrated, which isn’t true, but she is perhaps unremarked on in how she’s actually improved over the past twelve months. I’m not sure there’s a single soccer player alive in this moment who is more in form than Ertz. She’s always been a beast for Chicago, but I hazard a radical statement in saying that she’s the best she’s ever been in that defensive midfield role, and she provides cover for the Red Stars’ center-back pairing that they didn’t have during the World Cup break.

Also providing cover? Alyssa Naeher. She’s moving with a confidence that comes from guiding the best team in the world to a championship as their #1 goalkeeper, and it’s continued to show. Her ability to organize her defense is underrated, but she also dealt with a direct attack tonight and showed her ability to make good decisions in the air, with space.

Who else we got. Katie Johnson? Perfect in her role off the bench. Katie Naughton and Sarah Gorden? They held together just as much as necessary at all times, never trying to do too much or too little. Savannah McCaskill is a menace to bring off the bench. Nikki Stanton is free in the wind, not a yellow card to hold her.

Allow me one final note, on a player who wasn’t actually in Tacoma today. It’s through retroactive results that we’ve had the scope to see how much the Red Stars relied on a hurt Danny Colaprico to hold things together in the midfield while World Cup players were missing, and it’s a blessing that she’s had a chance to rest a bit mid-season. She’s an important part of this team, but only when her legs will give her the work that her mind deserves. Her input this year has been truly admirable, and I hope she can get back in with this rejuvenated squad in upcoming weeks.

As for what’s next - anything is possible, and I don’t know if this form is going to last. Next week’s game without USWNT players against a crunching Utah Royals squad could be a painful one, and there are a lot of games left in this season. But this is the cohesive, dominating soccer Chicago promised us early this season, and it’s better than the best we got in 2018. This team is hungry, and they’re ready to accept the good things that come with that. I’m ready too.

The Chicago Red Stars (7W 2D 5L, 23pts, 3rd place) are back at it next Saturday when they host Utah.

Yes. Yes good.

See, this is nice. We should do this more often.

We’re going with Yuki Nagasato as our WOTM. She scored a stupendous goal in the second half and, while she wasn’t credited with an assist, she was absolutely instrumental in the first goal scored by Arin Wright. She had a really good game, and it was lovely to see her back in strong form.

The club has welcomed back their U.S. national team players in Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, Morgan Brian, and Tierna Davidson - and with their return helped unite 17,388 in the stands last Sunday when they beat North Carolina Courage, 2-1.

The Red Stars will try and keep their current win streak going as they travel west to take on Reign FC in their new home in Tacoma, Washington at Cheney Stadium.

Where We Last Saw Them

Red Stars and Reign FC last played each other back on June 23, in Bridgeview at SeatGeek Stadium. Red Stars struggled to finish their opportunities on goal throughout the match, and Reign FC would go on the win the game, 0-1, on a late goal from Jess Fishlock. It would mark their third consecutive loss on the season at the time.

Starting Lineup We’d Like To See

The Red Stars shifted some things around against the Courage last match in an effort to keep their primary personnel on the pitch while managing player rotation for players who returned. Arin Wright playing on the top line, keeping Sarah Gorden at centerback, all moves that proved to be a winning combination.

Keys To The Match

Game Recognize Game: Both teams have split their series in the regular season so far with each team getting a win over the other. Red Stars currently hold the tiebreaker on goal differential, but a loss against this team would give Reign FC the potential advantage. A record crowd is expected to be on had for this match, and it’ll be rooting against Chicago.

You Looking Unfamiliar: Reign FC have gone through some massive roster changes over the last several weeks. While they have lost players to injuries, they have recently welcomed back several of their players back from World Cup duty, and have signed additional players to the roster - including former Red Star Rosie White.

Players To Watch

Reign FC: Ifeoma Onumonu played a big role in the win for the Reign back in June, and she could cause problems for Chicago again.

Chicago Red Stars: Big crowds love Sam Kerr, and she loves them. Keep your eyes on the current NWSL golden boot leader.
