After four matches in 13 days, fatigue is setting in for the Fire

The Chicago Fire looked slow, tired, and had to fight their way into Wednesday night’s 0-0 draw with FC Cincinnati at Nippert Stadium. Earning a point on the road is a good result in MLS, but this match felt like one the Fire should have won.

“We started a bit slow,” Fire head coach Raphael Wicky said after the match. “It’s not an easy place to play here. No one really scores here that much. No one really wins here. They’re very tough to play in that 5-3-2, and we knew that.”

The Fire nearly gave up a goal very early, but Man of the Match Bobby Shuttleworth came up big, saving a point blank Cincinnati header in the first minute.

“We switched off a bit, and in the first couple minutes, that’s not something that can happen,” Shuttleworth said. “We’ll have to go over that, and make sure it’s corrected for the next game. In terms of confidence, it’s nice always to get an early touch, and make a big save when you need to. But that’s why I’m there, to make saves.”

The match was lifeless until the 61st minute, when Wicky brought on Elliot Collier, Djordje Mihailović, and Jonathan Bornstein. Instantly, the Fire had legs again, and they nearly scored in the 70th minute, when Collier slid a ball from the right side of the 18 yard box to Ignacio Aliseda, who calmly dribbled by several Cincinnati defenders, and slotted it into goal with his left foot.

But, the goal was disallowed after a VAR check because of a handball in the buildup. Still, the energy from the substitutes brought the Fire back into the match.

“The subs came in really strong,” Fire midfielder Gastón Giménez said. “We needed that freshness. With so many games back to back, it’s important they come in with that freshness. And today they showed they’re ready to play.”

A few minutes later, VAR crushed Chicago’s hopes yet again. Robert Berić was left bleeding in the box after banging heads with Cincinnati defender Kendall Waston. Berić was down for several minutes, requiring a wrap around his bleeding head, but there was no penalty given. It looked like a penalty live, but after video review, it wasn’t as clear cut.

“I said it was a penalty,” Wicky said. “If it would have been against us, I probably would have said no. So I cannot judge it. With VAR, they checked it. We gotta trust the referees and take their decision. From my view, I couldn’t really tell.”

For the Fire, this was the fourth match in just under two weeks, with three of those on the road. Other than Shuttleworth, Wicky kept the starting eleven unchanged from the team that lost 3-1 to NYCFC over the weekend.

“I felt some guys had a little bit of heavy legs, which is normal after all these games,” Wicky said. “And the subs came in very well. I’m very pleased with Jonny, Djordje, Elliot and also Wyatt (Omsberg) who came in very late in the game, which is not easy.”

With the draw, the Fire move to 2-5-2 on the season, currently sitting 13th in the MLS Eastern Conference standings. Chicago returns to Soldier Field to host the New England Revolution on Sunday (6:30 p.m. CT, WGN & ESPN+).

This was a boring game to be sure, but a point on the road is a point on the road. Instrumental in getting that point was goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. He only had 3 saves, but two of them were spectacular, and he did keep a clean sheet. For that, he gets Hot Time’s Man of the Match.

The Fire will be looking for a second win over FCC in the last eight days

For the second time in eight days, the Chicago Fire take on FC Cincinnati. Last time, it was a 3-0 Fire win in the first match at Soldier Field in 15 years. This time, the Fire visit Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium, which means artificial turf.

At Soldier Field, the Fire cracked Cincinnati’s 5-3-2 low block quickly, with goals from Fabian Herbers and Álvaro Medrán in the first ten minutes. Herbers said the team wants to score another early goal, but if they can’t, it’s about staying smart.

“I hope we can get that, but if not, it’s just about staying compact and not conceding an easy goal,” Herbers said. “I think our chances will come and when we capitalize on it, then yeah, we go into the game with a lead and it’s obviously easier for us.”

Fire head coach Raphael Wicky expects Cincy to stick with the defensive style.

“We’ve definitely seen them play in the last couple games where they stay in that 5-3-2,” Wicky said. “I think it’s probably going to be very similar, but they know us well, as well. So it’s going to be very tough, very competitive game, especially going in with their surface. That’s probably going to be an advantage, as well. So we are going to go in there and try to do the same thing we did last game, which is going and start strong and score goals.”

As usual, Wicky was very generous with updates on players during his weekly news conference. Here’s what we learned:

After missing the NYCFC match, Bobby Shuttleworth trained the last couple days. Wicky will decide today whether he can start tonight in goal.

CJ Sapong is back in Chicago, and is in quarantine. He should rejoin full team training in a week or so. CJ recently announced on Instagram his fiancée gave birth to a baby girl.

Djordje Mihailović didn’t play against NYCFC because of an upset stomach. He should be ready to go tonight.

Johan Kappelhof will need more time before he’s healthy and ready to play.

Because of the pandemic, MLS made the decision that players could not leave on international duty, so Przemysław Frankowski wasn’t allowed to join Poland for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. He’s still with the Fire.

Álvaro Medrán’s shirt game is better than yours.

Here we go again.

If you look at the story of the 2020 Chicago Fire, playing two games in 8 days against the worst team in Major League Soccer is exactly what the team needs. You can tell by just watching them that at certain points in games, they’re lost with no idea what to do next. But at other times, they know exactly what to do and have no problem executing their game plan. This is a team learning how to play together on the fly, and under a set of circumstances that no one ever thought they would have ever had to go through.

This is a game where the Fire can learn more about themselves. They can figure out who they are as individual players and who they are in relation to their teammates. I want to continue the good football they played in the second part of the first half against New York and last Tuesday against the same side they play next. I want to see Robert Beric get on the score-sheet and contribute to a victory. I want to see the defense finally go 90 minutes without a brain fart or misplay.

I want 90 minutes of complete soccer. I want to see some Progress.

After their destruction at the hands of the Fire, FC Cincinnati came back last weekend to hold DC United to a scoreless draw.

Suggested Lineup

There’s no real difference to the outfield players in the last few games and honestly, that’s fine. During the normal course of the game, there’s been times where they’ve played quite well. They just need to do it longer and more. As for goalkeeper, Shuttleworth has practiced the last two days, but more on that in a bit.

Keys To The Match

Dominate the Game: Just like last time, FC Cincinnati will crumble to pressure early and often— and not just to one kind of pressure, either. They can’t play out of the back, so high press them when you turn the ball over in the final third. The back four’s communication isn’t that good, so pressure their backline with penetrating off the ball runs. Theft can’t deal with high tempo plays, so push the ball forward with one and two-touch passing.

Find Your Confidence: This is the perfect game to find what was lost against NYCFC. The good stretches of play were outdone by the poor mistakes that led to the game getting blown wide open. The Fire need to find that form they had when they were in control of NYCFC and last week against this same squad. The key to owning the game is to play like they’re owning the game.

Play Your Kids: This one is kind of dumb and meatball-y. But hear me out, Start Gabriel Slonina in goal. The biggest reason for failure last week was Connor Sparrow making mistakes that a professional MLS level goalkeeper in net cannot make, even in their first game. On the first goal, he didn’t challenge properly and got caught on the wrong foot.

At some point in the contest, I’d also love to see Andre Reynolds II out there. What happened to him is a bit unfortunate in that both players ahead of him on the depth chart (Miguel Navarro and Jonathan Bornstein) have both played well when they’ve been on the pitch, and all of a sudden, left back has been extremely competitive. That being said, giving homegrown players a chance has never been a bad thing Because there is no US Open Cup, and because of playing against the worst team in the league, there are no easy opportunities to give your young talent minutes. In this game against this opponent, it would be a good opportunity to give some of the kids some minutes.

How To Watch

Television: WGN-TV

Streaming: ESPN+

Final Thoughts

They’re playing in Cincinnati and don’t have the emotions and tension of playing at home for the first time, so it will probably be a closer game than the last one, but the Fire should win this one comfortably. 2-0 is the final score.
