Wicky: “All these little things right now are not going our way.”

The pouring rain should have been the first clue that this game was going to be strange.

After having two goals called back by VAR, a penalty saved after a fight over who should take the shot, and more problems with poor marking and poor finishing, the Chicago Fire lost yet another match in 2020, this time a 4-1 defeat to Orlando City at Exploria Stadium Saturday night.

The defeat saw the team drop to the bottom of the MLS standings. After the match, forward CJ Sapong got philosophical about the team’s recent struggles, with a famous quote about people making their own luck.

“Luck is, they say, when preparation meets opportunity,” Sapong said. “So that’s where we have to do our due diligence, keep preparing the right way, and when we get those opportunities and those chances, we put them away.”

It would certainly be easy to blame bad luck for this Fire loss. Orlando scored the opener in the 11th minute, when Schaumburg native Chris Mueller scored off a weak shot that was deflected and slid into Chicago’s net in the pouring rain.

A shot by Ignacio Aliseda hit the post in the 20th minute, and not long after that Orlando superstar Nani converted a header after being poorly marked by Boris Sekulić, making it 2-0 Orlando.

That’s when things started to get really strange. Francisco Calvo headed home a beautiful ball off a set piece by Álvaro Medrán, but it was disallowed because Elliot Collier—who did not appear to have any effect on the goal—was found to be offside by VAR.

Shortly after, Orlando defender Ruan was called for a handball in the box. As Raphael Wicky looked on, Medrán and Robert Berić argued for nearly a minute over who would take the penalty, when finally Calvo stepped in to settle the dispute. Medrán took the shot, which was saved.

“I told the team at halftime it’s my fault,” Wicky said. “I take it on me. I didn’t assign a player who takes the penalty, but then what happened after is unacceptable. It can not happen. If a player says I’m going to take it, then the other player has to say ok.”

The penalty taker issue was cleared up in the second half. Mueller took Miguel Navarro down in the box in the 48th minute, and Berić stepped up to the spot and buried the shot, cutting Orlando’s lead in half.

The Fire appeared to equalize in the 57th minute, when, through heavy traffic, Sekulić put away a ball that skipped his way off a corner kick. But, VAR took away this goal as well, when it was found that the ball hit Mauricio Pineda’s hand earlier in the play.

“All these little things right now are not going our way,” Wicky said. “Sometimes in life, it happens. I don’t know why. I don’t have the answer for that.”

Orlando went on to score twice more. Junior Urso made it 3-1 in the 78th minute, and Benji Michel scored late in stoppage time to make it 4-1 Orlando.

“I think anybody that’s watching that game says that that’s unlucky,” Sapong said. “I believe that energetically, there’s always a way to approach the game with optimism, and obviously as the results don’t go your way, that’s harder and harder to do.”

Having won just once in the last nine games, the loss leaves the Fire in last place in the East. But with 10 teams making the playoffs, the team is still only three points out of a postseason spot.

“We’ve got to be better on both ends of the field,” said Wicky. “It reflects a little bit the whole season. We’re playing well, we’re creating a lot of big, big chances, we’re giving up too many, two easy goals again. But it reflects a little bit the whole season where right now, for whatever reason, those little things go against us. They don’t fall to our side.”

Next Up: The Fire have back-to-back home matches at Soldier Field. On Wednesday, the team hosts Houston Dynamo (6:30 p.m. CT, WGN & ESPN+) and on Sunday, Sept. 27, the Fire face Atlanta United (6:30 p.m. CT, WGN & ESPN+).

After a game like that, it’s really hard to pick a man of the match. Despite once again playing like the better team for long stretches, everything seemed to go wrong at the worst possible moment. Because of that, we’re giving our MotM award to Ignacio Aliseda. Nacho was the most dangerous player who didn’t commit a fatal mistake for the team. he had some nice penetrating runs and was always dangerous with the ball at his feet.

Now let us know how you saw it. Vote for your choice for MOTM/WOTM in the poll below. The poll will be open for two days, after which we’ll publicize the results.
The Fire take on Orlando tonight at 6:30 p.m. CT

Ignacio Aliseda is nothing if not confident.

“I’m very certain that we’re going to qualify for the playoffs,” the Argentine attacker told reporters during a conference call Friday. But is crazy? Maybe not. Sure, the Chicago Fire have struggled this season. With nine points through 11 matches, the team sits 12th in the Eastern Conference standings. That’s the bad news.

The good news? In the East, the top 10 teams make the playoffs this season. Teams 1-6 qualify directly, and teams 7-10 will each compete in a play-in match.

That puts the Fire just two points out of the final playoff spot. If Chicago can somehow steal three points tonight away at Orlando City, a playoff spot won’t seen so far fetched. To do that, the Fire will need to avoid the careless defensive mistakes that have plagued the team this season, and actually finish some chances on the other end. CJ Sapong and Djordje Mihailovic are both available, which should help on the attacking end.

Flipping the Script: Orlando City vs Chicago Fire MLS 2020 Game 12 Preview

Ruben gets you ready for Saturday at Orlando City

Last week the Chicago Fire showed us that they’re not the garbage fire that they’ve flirted with being at times this year. Instead, they showed us that they’re more akin to a Shakespearean tragedy. It’s as if it doesn’t really matter what they do or how good they play, at the end of the day something will happen to prevent the Fire from realizing their goals. It will happen in the worst of ways, too. A deflection will scoot under a foot, or a cross will get blown in by the wind. It’s always something.

However, It’s not yet over. The Fire get a chance to play against the hottest team in the league while, they have an opportunity to rewrite the script against the hottest team in the league, against whom they’ve never lost on the road. Chicago have played well but have nothing to show for it other than broken dreams and shattered expectations. It’s time to change that. It’s time to start winning.

Orlando are the hottest team in MLS at the moment. Since the restart, Orlando have won 4 of their first six, including a 3-1 win over Atlanta and a 2-1 win over Miami. Their only loss of the first group of games was also to Miami in a 3-2 thriller on their first game back. They also reached the Final in the MLS is back tournament, for whatever that’s worth.

Suggested Lineup

CJ Sapong is finally healthy, and thus, is ready to be reinserted into the starting XI. Herbers, meanwhile, has earned his place in front of Przemysław Frankowski for the other wing spot, and should start regardless if Frankie is healthy enough to play. (He is currently listed as questionable in MLS’s injury report). The midfield has been solid, so Djordje Mihailovic is the odd man out there. And as much as I’d like to not see Francisco Calvo out there, there’s no one on the roster better than he is at the moment.

Keys To The Match

Nani, No: While Ben Miller of the Mane Land identified Mauricio Pereyra as the most impactful player on Orlando’s hot streak. For my money, it’s still Nani that has to be slowed down. Stopping him means stopping Chris Muller, their leading scorer, from getting as many goal-scoring opportunities and it should put them off enough to find the Fire opportunities to win the game.

Waste Not: One of the Fire’s big problems is that they once again are wasteful in front of goal. There were ample opportunities created by the Fire’s offense that were either whiffed or mishit or hit right at the goalkeeper. They better have been working on their finishing at training. Also helping matters is the return of CJ Sapong to the lineup. His finishing ability should increase the number of goals scored, and the more he gets back in the groove, the better that will get.

Tempo Control: Controlling the tempo on the road means something else on the road than it does at home. The home side generally will have more possession than when they’re playing in someone else’s building. This means that what the Fire needs to do to control the game is make Orlando pass the ball backward and try to make quick counters when the ball comes over the top from the back. They need to disrupt Orlando and make them uncomfortable.

Final Thoughts

I think it’s going to be a lot similar to last week. The Fire are going to come out blazing, but lose it a bit toward the end. I think it’s going to be a 1-1 draw.
