Middle-of-the-road scores for a middle-of-the-road match. But one player stood out.

In boxing, occasionally a fight will be called tough to score. Doing player ratings for Saturday night’s 2-2 draw between Chicago Fire and Montreal Impact at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey feels much the same way.

There were a lot of fair, but unspectacular performances by the Fire tonight. Maybe fatigue is setting in, or maybe it was playing a team that sits deep as Montreal did, but all in all, it was a meh performance for the Fire.

Robert Beric: 6 – He scored an opportunistic goal in the 15th minute to put the Fire ahead early. He was in position to score a couple of chances if the service was clean. A little quieter in the second half. A solid shift overall.

Ignacio Aliseda: 5 – While not a terrible night for the young, designated player, it was a quiet one. It feels like the flair that Nacho had in his first few games has disappeared a bit and was definitely missing tonight.

Fabian Herbers: 4 – While Fabian has looked great at Soldier Field, away from home is another story. His footprint on the game was minimal. This could be due to the way Montreal plays. With five across the back, it takes away from Fabian’s greatest strength, exploiting holes in the defense. There were not many of them and thus the German struggled tonight.

Djordje Mihailovic: 6 – He intercepted the pass from Diop, which lead to the goal by Beric. He spent more time pushed inside tonight, which had mixed results. The reason why he got a solid mark is two-fold. One, he set up a goal, and the other is Montreal knew he was important and thus he suffered three of the Fire’s seven fouls.

Álvaro Medrán: 5 – While Alvaro was active tonight, he did not have a lot to show for it. His set pieces were decent and his corner was the assist on Calvo’s equalizer in the 73rd minute. However, part of that was Montreal’s decision to sit so deep.

Gastón Giménez: 6 – It was really a standard performance for the Chicago Fire’s central midfielder. He had a total of six unsuccessful passes, four of which were on set pieces. He took a shot at goal of the year in the 51st minute, but he launched it well over the bar. His absence on international duty over the next month will be huge.

Miguel Ángel Navarro: 4 – It made sense to start the 21-year-old with national team duty upcoming. He definitely did not make the most of it. He was beaten one-v-one, which led to the fluky deflection by him on Brault-Gillard’s cross leading to Urruti’s goal. While the deflection was unfortunate, the defense was lacking.

Francisco Calvo: 7 – After several lean games in “MLS is drunk” and the first few games in the MLS return, the Fire’s captain has found his form with the new squad. He took advantage of a free header and Clement Diop going walkabout on a corner kick in the 73rd minute, and brought the Fire level. He had several clear clearances and was positioned well evening.

Mauricio Pineda: 5 – He was closest to the ball after Shuttleworth spilled Bojan’s shot, allowing Lappalaninen to step in and bring Montreal level in the 21st minute. He was also marking Urruti on his goal, but on that goal, his positioning was sound. Urruti was just able to deflect the ball enough to put the Impact ahead. But, all in all, a fair performance for the Fire rookie.

Boris Sekulic: 4 –Boris was nearly spun into the ground by Bojan prior to Bojan’s shot, which was ultimately spilled by Shuttleworth. As a starting defender, he needs to be better there. He did well early getting forward, especially early on in the game, but was unable to get anything out of it.

Bobby Shuttleworth: 5 – He made six saves during the game—three of them brilliant—helping the Fire secure the point on the road. However, it was his spillage on a shot from Bojan that allowed Lappalainen to score.

Jonathan Bornstein: 5 – Johnny B came in the 72nd minute to make sure the Fire stayed in the game and he did his job. He wasn’t very involved overall but had one interception and provided a bit of stability in the Fire’s back four helping them to defense to see the game out.

C.J. Sapong: 4 – He is credited with one clearance and appeared to be offside on at least one occasion with the Fire trying get back in the game.

Elliot Collier: 4 – Whether you call him the Kiwian Crouch or Kiwinho, this was largely a forgotten performance. He was only able to complete one of four passes and had no shots. He really needs to do better at being a weapon on set pieces and crosses.

Tonight’s Man of the Match had one of the best games I’ve seen him have in a Fire shirt. It was largely mistake free and besides that, he scored a fantastic goal. I am of course, talking about Francisco Calvo. The day after his contract extension was announced, Calvo proved why it was a good decision. Well done to the Fire captain.

Raphael Wicky’s men are going for their third straight win

The Chicago Fire and Montreal Impact are two teams headed in different directions going into tonight’s match at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ (6:30 p.m. CT, WGN & ESPN+).

The Fire have won its last two matches in convincing fashion—six goals for, zero against. Meantime, Montreal has lost four in a row. The Impact haven’t played a true home game in nearly a month, having been forced to move its operations to New Jersey because of COVID-related travel issues.

“They are on the high at the minute. We are on the low. So, we need to try to find a way to change that,” Montreal Impact Head Coach Thierry Henry told Hot Time.

Henry was full of praise for Raphael Wicky’s Fire team at a news conference this week.

“Listen, I’ve been impressed recently with how they’ve been playing,” Henry said. “They’ve been unlucky in some games ... They try to play from the back, they try to put pressure, they have an idea, that’s how I like to see the game be played.”

For Wicky’s part, he gave high praise to Henry’s Impact, as well. Even with Montreal at a low point in their season, Wicky knows his men have to play smart, or they’ll get punished.

“I see a team which has a style, has an identity,” Wicky said. “It’s a team who is clearly possession orientated, who always wants to build from the back and who has clear movements on how they want to start their build and start their action in the game, and they have good individual quality who can hurt you. So that’s what I see, so we are going to be prepared for that.”

Following this match, the Fire will be without a couple key players leaving on international duty—Gastón Giménez, who is making a one-time switch to play for Paraguay, and Miguel Navarro, who got the call up for his native Venezuela. Both men will have to quarantine for 10 days after returning, so they’ll be away from the Fire for almost a month.

Some good news: Fire defender Johan Kappelhof is off the injury report, and Wicky indicated he’s coming along slowly but surely, so he should be available to help the team soon, possibly even tonight.

In a strange year of strange things, the Chicago Fire are about to embark on one of their strangest moments. Due to the travel restrictions placed on them by the Canadian government, the Montreal Impact is currently playing home games at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. What that’s meant for Montreal is two months away from family, friends, and their home. That’s caused what was once a promising season with new manager Thierry Henry at the helm to sputter into a nose dive with a crash landing. They are what the Fire could have been... and still could be.

Watching the Impact is like looking into a mirror. It’s been since they’ve come into the league. They’re always better or worse then the Fire with the Fire’s own concepts. From being the new home of Fire fan favorite Justin Mapp to being the next and last stop of the Frank Klopas Managerial Experience to being the team that actually signed Didier Drogba, L’Impact have always felt tied to the Fire organization for better or worse. Saturday, the Fire are playing their reflection. It’s going to be uncomfortable.

Montreal has lost four games in a row by a combined score of 14-4; two 4-1 losses against New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia, and a pair of 3-1 defeats against Vancouver and the Revs. Going back even further, They’ve only won three of their last ten games, and all three were against other Canadian teams.

Suggested Lineup

Two W’s in a row with the same lineup means just keep doing it. The only thing I could see is Miguel Navarro playing instead of Jonathan Bornstein for schedule congestion purposes, especially since Navarro is about to leave for international duty with Venezuela. The club has 5 games in the next two weeks, including this weekend, and I imagine we’ll get some rotation at some point.

Keys To The Match

Hungry Hungry Herbers : The Fire are rolling and a big reason why is that they’ve found out who their best No. 10 is. From absolutely nowhere, Fabian Herbers has become the fulcrum this team has desperately needed. He’s not a flashy playmaker with incredible footwork and vision who makes playing soccer into art. While he does have a good first touch, his passing ability and vision are just okay. What makes Herbers work is that he has something that the Fire attack has missed for a long time. He has hustle and workrate.

For as long as he’s not on the pitch, you’ll never see Herbers not doing good things. He’s always making off the ball runs and when the ball gets turned over, he’s always the first one chasing to win it back. For his efforts, he has three goals and has scored in each of the last two games. From absolutely nowhere, this is Fabian Herbers’ team. And as long as it’s working, it should stay that way. Keep feeding him in good spots and the Fire should

The Best Defense Is A Good Midfield: Along with Herbers, the thing that’s kept the Fire successful over the last week is that they’re not asking the defenders to defend all that much. A lot of the Fire’s defending is happening further up the pitch. The double pivot of Medrán and Giménez do a good job cutting off the passing lanes in midfield, and the wide midfielders are pressuring the opposing wings so much that there’s not much joy to be had there either. It’s starting to take a lot of effort to break them down to get at the soft center back pair, and the poorly organised teams the Fire have been playing recently don’t have that effort in them.

Montreal is in a similar boat. They’ve lost 4 in row and morale is probably at it’s lowest point. The Fire should keep dominating in midfield and that should give them an easy route to victory.
