Struggling to find the back of the net through the first four fixtures of the 2013 MLS season, the Chicago Fire put three past the visiting New York Red Bulls to earn the team's first win of the season with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon.

BRIDGEVIEW - Struggling to find the back of the net through the first four fixtures of the 2013 MLS season, the Chicago Fire put three past the visiting New York Red Bulls to earn the team's first win of the season with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon.

A first half equalizer from Daniel Paladini and a second half brace from Maicon Santos helped give the Fire (1-3-1, 4 points) their first win of the season after falling behind in the 17th minute following a Jamison Olave volley.

"The group is united. There's a belief in the group," said head coach Frank Klopas. "It was important for us today to not only play well, but to get the win. I give my team a lot of credit. We have a long way to go, but the effort, the attitude, the work goes in every day. So more than anything, I feel great about them."

Olave's goal came from a New York corner kept alive by Tim Cahill. The Australian headed Juninho's cross on to Brandon Barklage, whose flick found Olave at the 6 yard box. With his back to goal, the Colombian volleyed past Sean Johnson to give New York (1-3-2, 5 points) the lead.

Eight minutes later, it seemed things were getting worse for the Fire. Chris Rolfe hit a penalty wide left in the 25th minute after sending Luis Robles the wrong way.

The team's scoring woes would end there, however, thanks in large part to the play of Paladini.

Paladini made the most of a lofted cross from Hunter Jumper - making his first MLS start - in the 44th minute, anticipating his run to meet the ball before Robles.

"I made a run, but [Jumper] played a perfect ball" Paladini said of his header. "The wind caught it, so I knew I was going to get there before the goalie."

Paladini earned MOTM honors for his goal and assist, setting up Santos' winner. According to the midfielder, the win is a morale boost for the Fire.

"We all believe in ourselves, the coaches believe in us," he said. "We had a meeting this past week, it was a positive meeting, and things have changed for the better. We have a good team. We might not have the New York superstars, but we have a solid team."

One of those "New York superstars" is Thierry Henry, who entered the match in the 61st minute. Just 7 minutes later, the Frenchman had Johnson beat, but his effort clanged off the far post.

"When you see that, one of if not the best player in the league, that's a bit of wake-up call," Paladini said of Henry's shot.

Santos entered the match in the 63rd minute, replacing Sherjill MacDonald. It would take some time for Santos to find his feet, but once he did, he scored twice in a six-minute span to earn the three points.

The first came in the 83rd minute from a Paladini throughball, and the second came in the 89th minute when Jeff Larentowicz headed across the face of goal.

"Everyone knows when you enter in the second half, you have to deal with players who are already warm," Santos said. "It was a nice assist [from Paladini]. I think everyone expects me to [shoot] the ball. I cut in and scored.

"We practice that every day in training," Santos said of the second. "The long ball across, run to the second post and the other guy hits across. That's basic for us."

Next up for the Fire is a trip to Houston on April 14. Currently sitting in third in the East, the Dynamo (3-2-0, 9 points) present a tough match-up for the Fire. But with injured players expected back next week, the Fire might have some competition for spots.

"It's not for me to decide," Santos said when asked if he thinks he deserves a start. "I'm just going to keep doing my work and make the most of my time whenever they [come]."

Similar thoughts were echoed by Paladini.

"It is what it is," he said. "One week Patrick [Nyarko] is out, someone comes in. When Patrick comes in, it's not like it's our spot. It's competitive, it's our job."

NOTES

The Fire were without Patrick Nyarko, Gonzalo Segares, Dilly Duka, Alex and Arne Friedrich. Segares, a late scratch, said he expects to be back next week, while Klopas hinted that Friedrich was getting close to fitness.

Logan Pause made his first appearance of the season, playing the full 90 after missing out through injury.

The Fire outshot New York 13-10, with 4 of those being on target. The Red Bulls won the possession battle 52-48 percent.

CAUTIONS: Austin Berry (16th minute); Markus Holgersson (51st minute) and Peguy Luyindula (66th minute)

A bit of a depleted Fire side will take on the Red Bulls today in what is really a desperation game. It's odd to be saying that in early April but it's also the truth

The Men in Red are still not able to get fully healthy, and this should create some interesting lineup juggling for Frank Klopas today. The Fire need a win (and some goals) in the worst way. It's going to be harder with yet another different lineup again this week. It figures to be a nice day in Bridgeview, with temps pushing 60 degrees. This will hopefully equate into a full and energized crowd.

Please join us at 4 on the gamethread to help urge the Men in Red on to 3 points. Lineups will be posted before kickoff. Let's go Fire!

The Fire look to bounce back after a 4-1 loss to Chivas USA. It won't be easy, but the Men in Red will hopefully get some positive momentum going as they welcome a strong New York Red Bulls team to Toyota Park on Sunday

After losing to Chivas USA in week 4, the Fire came out of the bye week in week 5 not having to play an MLS game. This meant they could not lose another league game, however they did drop a 1-0 friendly to NASL side Minnesota United FC. Even in a friendly against a lower league team, the Fire could not find their offense. It was hoped that the 2 week break would offer plenty of time for Frank to right the ship and try prepare for the game this Sunday. That's not looking so certain now as Patrick Nyarko picked up an injury in last Friday's friendly and the Fire are still not fully healthy.

The Fire come into this game having to dwell on the 4-1 loss to Chivas USA in week 4. The Fire played some of the best soccer we have seen this season from them for the first 60 minutes against Chivas and then they fell apart after that. Defensive miscues, being out muscled, and an own goal doomed the fire to a 0-3-1 start to the season with only 1 goal scored and 9 goals given up. This game also starts a month that sees the Fire play 3 of the top 4 teams in the Eastern Conference over the next 4 weeks. It will be crucial for them to have a good game against New York so that they can take some momentum heading into next week when they travel to Houston. It is also important for them to start picking up points as they do not want to fall further behind in the East.

New York is coming off their first win of the season last week versus Philadelphia. New York showed why they can be dangerous if all of their key players are healthy and on the field. They come to Chicago with a 1-2-2 record which puts them 6th best in the East. The Red Bulls have had trouble this season finishing off games, which will hopefully bode well for the Fire. New York has been giving up late goals and in some cases not even being able to find their offense in some games. For example, in the first game of the season New York gave up a 2 goal second half lead to Portland and that game ended in a tie. In their 2nd game of the season they gave up 2 goals in the last 10 minutes to San Jose and lost 2-1.

Lineups

With the Red Bulls struggling with some injuries (Lade is out, Henry, Cahill, and Espindola all questionable) this is how I think they will start if the questionable players are ready to go:

Robles

Kimura-Olave-Holgersson-Pearce

Steele-McCarty-Juninho-Cahill

Henry-Luyindula

The lineup that Frank may choose will be interesting because of injuries (Duka, Nyarko, Alex, Kinney, and Videira all listed as questionable) and players not being at full fitness (Friedrich). His starting lineup could look like this if the questionable players are ready to go on Sunday:

Johnson

Pause-Anibaba-Berry-Segares

Nyarko-Lindpere-Lawrentowicz-Duka

Rolfe-Macdonald

Tactics

Red Bull management decided to go with former player Mike Petke as head coach after conducting a coaching search to replace the departed Hans Backe. Being a first year coach he has relied heavily on the more experienced players on the team to direct the style of play. Henry, Juninho, and Cahill are the players that conduct the majority of play for New York and their plan will be to play through the middle. This makes every attack go through Juninho. The interesting thing is that last week when Philadelphia closed down Juninho and gave him no space to work in, New York started attacking the wings and eventually scored both of their goals from the wings. So the Red Bull team definitely showed some ability to adapt on the fly if need be.

I highly doubt that Petke will stray from a traditional 4-4-2 being a first year coach. He will probably keep the same tactics that he used against Philadelphia and employ them against the Men in Red. The main thing to watch is the aforementioned adaptability and how Petke can roll with the punches, so to speak. While his tactics switch worked in Philly, they were not successful against Montreal in week 4. Petke could not make the necessary adjustments to come back against the Impact in the 2nd half of that game.

Frank on the other hand has traditionally kept the same 4-4-2 formation since the start of the season. The style that he decides to use on Sunday will depend primarily on the personnel that he has available. If he decides to go with the same starting lineup that he used 2 weeks ago against Chivas USA, than look for the majority of attacking to go through the wings. If he decides to start Lindpere or Alex in the middle and if Duka starts, look for Rolfe to go back up top and look for Frank to try to use the center of the pitch as the focus of attacks. This will hopefully open up some space for the wings. But as always, as a last resort if Frank's original plan does not work, I look for the team to try to force everything through the wings or over the top with a long ball out of the back.

Key Matchups

New York's Forwards vs. Anibaba and Berry- If we look at the last game against Chivas USA, our backline had a pretty good first half. Anibaba and Berry were keeping Chivas attackers at bay by limiting them to 2 shots, with one being blocked and the other sailing wide of goal. The second half was another story. The Fire's defense gave up 7 shots and 4 of those were goals including an Anibaba own goal. It will be key that Anibaba and Berry put in the effort that they did in the first half of the game 2 weeks ago. If they don't and have mental lapses like they have had this season so far the experienced Red Bull forwards will exploit this and probably leave Toyota Park with all 3 points.

Chicago's center mids vs. Juninho and McCarty- It is key that the Fire's center mids contain Juninho and McCarty. It will make it easier to contain the Red Bulls attack as a whole. Unfortunately that is so much easier said than done. If the Fire are able to apply constant pressure on Juninho and McCarty this will force New York to play out on the wings. This will give the advantage to the Fire because they will be able to predict exactly where the attacks will be coming from. If the Fire's center mids give up space, Juninho will know how to use it and that is something that the Fire cannot afford to do if they want to take all 3 points on Sunday.

Wildcards

There is only one player on New York that can be considered a wildcard and that player is Thierry Henry. Last week against the Union, Henry showed that he is still one of the elite players in the league even though he just came back from an MCL sprain. If he does not play the Red Bulls are a completely different team and the Fire should be able to take advantage of that. If he does play on Sunday than he will garner the majority of the defensive attention and will be the player that can provide the difference in New York taking home 3 points.

The Fire's wildcard on Sunday is Joel Lindpere. If he starts against his former team he will have a chip on his shoulder with something to prove. No one on the Fire will be looking to score more than him. Trying to prove that a former team was wrong in trading him after providing 3 seasons of hard work and dedication should be more than enough motivation for Joel. Lindpere is also coming off a pretty successful international break and will be looking to translate that positive momentum to his club play.

Outcome

I know that it may be too early to call the 5th game in a season a must win game but this one is close for Frank and company. This game, as I said before, starts one tough month for the Fire. They have to get something positive out of this game. 3 points would be a great start to this stretch of games that includes some tough customers in the next month. Depending on the injury situation for the Fire, Frank may have to face a strong New York without a few of his first choice players. If the Fire's defense can put together a game like the one in Kansas City and the first 60 minutes of the Chivas USA game and can magically find their offense which has been missing, then there is a good chance the Men in Red can take all 3 points. If the Fire cannot put together a good game and if the players that are questionable for the game are not able to go, then the Fire will be in for a long afternoon. Personally, I cannot see the Fire winning this one and I hope they prove me wrong. New York wins this one 2-0 with goals from Henry and McCarty as the Fire still struggle to find their offense and have a tough time in the back without Friedrich being healthy and having to deal with Henry and the Red Bull attack.

After an off week that saw mixed results in terms of players getting fit for the game Sunday, the Fire will try to put their fresh legs to use against a very good New York team. With an anemic offense and a shaky defense thus far for the Men in Red, someone desperately needs to step up big Sunday afternoon

I exchanged notes with Dan Ferris over at Once A Metro ahead of Sunday's clash. Enjoy the exchange, and please join us Sunday on the gamethread.

1. Do you see Juninho playing only in a "Pirlo role" (great distribution and vision with low mobility) with New York? (via Adam Merges)

Even at 38 years old, so far when Juninho has played he has looked ten years younger. Tracking back and physically challenging opponents to force an error or win the ball, he covers much more ground than I expected him to. As the season progresses, of course there are concerns about wear and tear and that he might fall into a less mobile role. But the system that new head coach Mike Petke is implementing demands players moving and interchanging, creating space and keeping defenders guessing what's coming next. If Juninho can't give ninety minutes of that style then I expect to see the same active Juninho just for shorter amounts of time.

2. Hans Backe is out, Mike Petke in. How is Petke doing so far, and do fans see him as a long term solution in New York? (via Ryan Sealock)

Petke was a great hire, and the front office should have gone with him from the start instead of flirting with a couple of more high-profile European-experienced candidates. As long as New York is playing well and winning a decent amount, the fans will be happy with him leading the team. I'm not sure anyone expects him to win an MLS cup this year, and in a way I think that helps take some of the pressure off. The only way Petke doesn't stay on past this year is if the team doesn't make the playoffs.

3. How reliant will New York be on the health of Henry in order to be a successful club this season? (via Adam Merges)

Surprisingly, their best stretch of 2012 came when Henry was injured early on. They played a compact, organized style and got the job done. Henry will help the Red Bulls win a fair number of games, but I think their fate relies as much on Juninho, Tim Cahill, Fabian Espindola, and recent addition Peguy Luyindula as far as the attack is concerned. The Red Bulls have been knocked out of the MLS playoffs early the last three seasons in a row. Henry has played in all of those series. For New York to really make a splash, it's the surrounding cast that can lift the team higher than it has been before.

4. Give me a quick, overall report on how the Red Bulls have done so far this season. Strong points? Weak points? (via Ryan Sealock)

Their weak point is simple: they only have five points from their first five games. They fell apart in the second half against Portland blowing a two goal lead and then conceded two goals in the last ten minutes at San Jose. Maybe you can call that growing pains for a largely new starting eleven? Besides that, they've played largely impressive soccer.

Organized defense with a lot of possession that even managed to break through and score TWO goals in their last game against Philadelphia for their first win of 2013. A win away against Chicago on Sunday will go a long way to show that the Red Bulls are moving forward and can put something resembling a competitive season together.

Predicted starting lineup: So many injuries to consider, but the back line appears to be pretty set. I think their ideal starting eleven includes Heath Pearce, Marcus Holgersson, Jamison Olave, and Brandon Barklage as the back four with Dax McCarty, Juninho, and Tim Cahill tasked with controlling the midfield. That leaves Henry, Espindola, and Luyindula to round out a 4-3-3 formation. It looks unlikely that Henry and Espindola will be able to start on Sunday but might have roles off the bench. In that case, Cahill moves up top to partner with Luyindula and Jonny Steele and Eric Alexander will play in wider midfield roles.

Prediction: I think the New York defense can keep the recently stagnant Chicago attack at bay. Depending on who is available on the attacking side, I'll call it a 2-0 win for the Red Bulls.

Once A Metro Asks Hot Time In Old Town

1. Chicago is off to a slow start and still looking for their first win after three losses and one tie against some relatively tough opponents. Is your finger on the panic button or are these just early season hiccups?

Right now I am looking at this start a just a major hiccup. It's far too early to panic yet, especially when taking into account the fact of injuries. While all teams have to deal with them, the Fire have already had more than their fair share. This has caused a lot of lineup juggling and some players having to play out of position, which is never good for cohesiveness.

The most troubling thing for me is the woeful offense. It hasn't just been bad, it's been horrendous. It would be one thing if we were narrowly losing but were scoring goals. Right now nothing is going right on the top 3rd of the pitch. The team must address this problem in the summer window if things haven't gotten markedly better by then. Hopefully it won't be too late and the team will have gotten back on track.

2. With just one goal in their first four matches, what is the Chicago attack lacking considering that they scored the seventh most goals in MLS in 2012?

We know that Chris Rolfe is our most lethal scorer. Problem is, he tends to be streaky and while Sherjill MacDonald can score, he hasn't ever shown that he is a consistent, go to scorer either. Same with Maicon Santos. We traded away one streaky scorer (Dom Oduro) for another in Santos.

The 2 big factors affecting goal scoring for me are confidence and the midfield. Confidence obviously helps any player, but it can turn that great goal scorer into a world class one when he is confident and thinking he can beat the world. As I said previously, we don't even have a regular, legit every day goal scorer. And not having confidence in our closest thing to that (Rolfe) is not a good recipe for success. And I can't really blame him for that either as it would be hard for me to feel on top of the world after the start we have had. A couple of goals and a win would go a long way for everyone, especially the forward corps.

The other major factor is the midfield and their poor play this year. To be blunt, they haven't been getting it done and have been mostly bad. Rather than looking the cohesive unit building attacks like Fire fans thought they would, they have struggled to even keep possession so far. This equals sloppy play, bad passes, and an inability to get the ball up to the forwards to put in the goal. The midfield must play better to get the scoring going and so far that has not happened, at least as a functioning unit. The talent is there, so it's up to them to figure out how to fix it. This team won't start going up the standings until the midfield starting bossing the center of the pitch and dictating play, rather than the other way around.

3. The Fire brought in former Red Bull fan favorite and team MVP Joel Lindpere in the offseason as part of a major retooling of their midfield. How did Lindpere look in his first two starts and do you expect him to re-emerge as a regular in the starting eleven?

He has been bad so far. There is not a better way to describe it. I know Joel prefers the CAM role and had friction with Backe in NY over plying out on the wing last season, but he has looked completely lost so far this year. He missed last game due to international duty with Estonia, something Red Bull fans probably were used to as well.

It's really maddening for Fire fans right now as we all know what Joel is capable of. He has certainly dished out his share of pain against us in years past. That's why his shocking play so far is puzzling to me. Fortunately he is a seasoned veteran, and kows how to figure things out. I think once the midfield unit starts to gel as a whole it will help him out and vice versa. Until then, Frank may have to play around and shift Joel within the midfield. We are desperately needing someone who can spark some offense in the center of the pitch, and he just hasn't been able to do that. He may not like moving out wide, for example, but if it helps the team get going and is our best look right now then it needs to happen. I expect Joel to work hard and handle whatever role he is given.

Predicted lineup: Well, this one is hard. I posted on Monday that it looked like we could have a choice 11 for the first time this year. Unfortunately, since then it seems that Arne Friedrich and Logan Pause are questionable, and Patrick Nyarko and Dilly Duka will likely be out. This team just can't have anything go it's way right now. We will look to try to win with a less than optimal lineup yet again against a good team. This will increase pressure even more if that 3 points doesn't come. So, with a great deal of uncertainty as to who starts Sunday, here goes:

Johnson, Pause, Anibaba, Berry, Segares, Larentowicz, Lindpere, Alex, Atouba, Santos, Rolfe

Predicted scoreline: well, as I stated in the last Fireside Chat, it's not very fun predicting draws or losses every week. However, the Fire haven't really given me (or anyone else) a reason to pick better than that to be fair and honest. Until they do, and by God I hope it's soon, I am going to have to go with a 2-1 Fire loss. The Fire looked better against Chivas in the 1st half, but then the back line absolutely collapsed in the 2nd half. And given the fact that I don't think Arne will be fit to start, as well as Nyarko and Duka missing, I just have a hard time being confident. I hope I am proven greatly wrong and the Fire finally get that elusive first win, but I don't think it will be Sunday unfortunately. I will say goals from Rolfe for the Fire and Henry and Espindola from NYRB will chalk in the final score.
